Thanks MB, That was the first time I've been able to get anything recorded that sounded similar to what my ears were hearing... recording really makes me realize that keeping time and sloppy playing kinda glares at you when you hear it over and over again... I know it's about tone but the ego really wants perfection even if it's intended to be a technical evaluation of the amp and recording technique.

I picked up a Bogner 1x12 Cube cabinet from Ebay so I am hopeful that I'll be able to get some more recording done. Hopefully it will be a great sounding cabinet. It has a Vintage 30 in it and I'll need to hear it then decide if I'm inspired to buy a G12-65 to have the ultimate sound??

Thanks again!

I have to agree with M&B regarding the SM57 on guitar cabs: I've never liked 'em. If you can get your hands on an (out of production) EV ND-408, you're in for a treat. This is the best guitar cab mic I have ever used.

Try an SM57 if you already have one. That said my most used mic (when using just one) is a Sennheiser e906. If I have two channels I'll use a Royer R-121 along with either an e906 or an MD421. That said most of my old "Can You Hear It Ring?" CD was an old Shure 548 with an SM57 capsule, though on one track I used a tube Neumann U67 condensor mic.

I love the Royer 121! (If only I had the funds...) As well as a Neumann TLM 103 if we're talking pricey mics... The Sennheizer e906 is also one of those "always sounds good on a guitar cabinet" mics.

The EV 408, I haven't come across one of those in my day yet... They certainly won't break the bank though, very tempting. Right in the same monetary range is the Audix i5 which I had on loan one time, very nice and smooth. Kind of like all the qualities of a 57 that are good, and none of the bad. Big open warm bottom/low mid if I remember right. It doesn't "honk".

For the record, I've tried the Telefunken TD20, TD25, and TD200. None of them were really worth keeping, I sold them all. As cool looking as the TD200 is, it just didn't sit right in a mix, nor really sound like anything special by itself.

Another "for the record"- If anyone ever decides to get a Sennheizer 421, get the U-5 version and thank me later.

BTW, I liked the Xtra Crunchy clip the best.

Thanks Tom and everyone else. Those cuts were all done in the iso cab with a SM-58 but my favorite goto cab is a homemade 2x10 cab with an old Blue Alnico and an old Jensen P-10R from a Fender Super. It sounds great to me but I have never been able to record what I hear from it. Maybe I've learned enough to figure it out now?

I took a look at the other mics I have available and hopefully the SM-57 will be here this week.

1) Shure SM-58
2) Sennheiser MD 4231 U-5
3) MXL 990 - Large Diaphragm Condenser
4) MXL 991 - Pencil style Condenser

Hi rj,
This is my first post!! I have ordered and paid for a exspress kit from you and eagerly await its arrival. (South Africa)

I have aquired a fender vibro king 2x12 cab loaded with v30 (15 year old made in Ipswitch versions). I would be eager to hear your thoughts on the v30 in the Bognor cab.

BTW, it has been a pleasure dealing with you and thank for all your patience and help!!
:D
If it sounds good, it is good! Trust your ears
