I like Alphas, and have used CTS occasionally, but I don't know of a 3M Alpha at all. There is a 3MRA CTS. I used Weber's 3MRA and it worked for me when I was noodling with parallel setup of small mica and larger film caps. Never tried a 3M pot with an S taper, so I can't speak as to how drastic a difference it'll make.

Edit: FWIW, I did just see that Hoffman is out of stock of a 2ML Alpha. Hadn't seen that before.

Very tempting project and I would put it on my list after finalizing the SSS saga.

From what I am seeing it is very similar to Matchless Spitfire topology.

I've modded a custom amp for a friend that was based on Spitfire and it sounded great (after the mods, FWIW), so this should sound even better :)

RJ, I seem to remember that when this forum started out, there was some kind of ethical reluctance to ripping off amps that are in current production. Which, of course, the Songwriter very much is.

It's one thing to make your own version as a hobby project, but this seem to be headed in a different direction.

Offering kits, chassis, schematics and the like is very much stealing from me. At least that's how I see it.

By the way, Komet pays royalties to Ken's family for every Songwriter built. Would you like the address for where to send your checks?

Regards, Hogy, Komet Amplification

Hogy,

In order to take the high road and put the best interests of the forum first, I respectfully withdraw my offer to help folks put together one of these amps together.

If there is anything more you need of me, let me know. I typically provide anyone who has an issue concerning my ethics or professional offerings my phone number and will always go the extra mile to resolve any issue.

No disrespect intended Hogy, but perhaps you can offer a product to those of us who would prefer to do work ourselves and learn something. I think I'd prefer to build a Songwriter or Komet 60 than buy one off the shelf.

I think this model works for Ceriatone, though the cheap labour rates don't hurt either.

Perhaps a DLM kit would be good and you can give a cut to the Fischers?

It could be a win-win situation for all. Food for thought.
Yours Sincerely

I don't think it's ethical to produce kits and repro amps of ANY amp that is currently in production....

I'll bet none of these guys would be buying a Songwriter30 from Hogy. So I wonder if any real loss of income is occurring. Of course Hogy has the right to be annoyed as this is a potential threat to his business. Though I consider Ceriatone a greater threat than RJ.

I think that point is irrelevant, there's essentially an unwritten TAG gentlemen's agreement not to "aid and abet" reproducing current production models. Thus; when you look at Hogy's (Komet) situation, RJ did the right thing by respecting Hogy's wishes and no more discussion outside of Hogy and RJ is even needed. Nevertheless, if a hobbyist wants to make his own thing happen, for the serious person there's no reason to be held back by RJ bowing out.

I agree and if you take 2tone's stance then Valvestorm, Triode, Marsh, Mojo, etc would cease selling parts/kits as well.

I take your point, but I think it has to be considered on an amp by amp basis. I'm referring to tweed Fenders in particular. Fender ceased production and later resumed production once it become apparent that there were healthy sales of reproduction amps and kits. The same can also be said of the 18 watt Marshall, the DIY community put that amp back into production.

Dumble amps is another tricky one. They are sort of available provided you can jump through all the hoops, so I don't have too much sympathy for HAD for this reason.

As far a clone Soldanos or Caswell's go these guys seem to be pretty cool about it all so it isn't an issue.

Of course the Songwriter doesn't fall into these categories.
Yours Sincerely
