Mil Spec PEC pots?

Post by koffee_iv »

I ran across a post that links to a guts pic of a Komet. I noticed the pots were very solid looking, not cheap looking like most pots appear. The brand was PEC but since the comments on the pics were in spanish... I'm monolingual at best.

Dose anyone know about these?

Also, PRP or Mills resistors from Sonic Craft. http://www.soniccraft.com/products/resistors.htm
Are these apropriate for amp builds?

Yep, you guessed it. I'm a newb. Fortunately I have a "high tech" friend who helps, although he thinks tube amps are "quaint".

Thanks

Lots of folks here use PEC pots. That is indeed what is used by Komet. They get them from the commercial partner to TEDSS, http://www.tedss.com/

PEC Pots

Here are the numbers you're looking for Trainwreck amps:

1M audio pot RV4NAYSD105C
500k audio pot RV4NAYSD504C
250k audio pot RV4NAYSD254C
25k Linear pot RV4LAYSD253A
5k Linear pot RV4LAYSD502A

I had to make a note of these after accidentally ordering the wrong ones a couple of times. Very costly mistake with $10 pots.

Tedss.com and Digikey both stock these pots. Tedss generally has the better prices, but Digikey sometimes comes in a couple of $$ cheaper on certain pots. Also the part numbers (military specification) I've given you are universal for multiple manufacturers. i.e. Clarostat, Allen Bradley, Ohmite, etc... Which you should be able to use interchangably.

Good Luck,

BTW, that RV4 number is the milspec number. For chuckles, you can look at the bottom of this spec sheet to decipher them:

Great, Thanks. Any thoughts on the resistors?

To add to this thread.......

Surplus outlets stock Allen-Bradley, Reon, Clarostat and others
in the sealed 2 watt RV4 type pots at much better prices than $10.00
each.
Audio taper pots are much harder to find surplus but I have them
in bourns listed on my website.

I have 25K and the 5K linear pots in RV4 type along with a Reon
30K mil-spec in stock too.

No Audio taper Mil-Spec pots in stock at this time

My price on the RV4 type pots are $ 2.50 each

It might be a lot less like pulling teeth to get those pots here: HTTP://WestLabs.com/Frames.HTML

Digikey does have the PEC pots but they use a different part number. For example, the 1M is listed as KA1051S28-ND.

Anyway, WTF, you know? The price here was about what WestLabs sells them for.

Those are Clarostats. If going the milspec route, I personally prefer the feel of PECs. The turn very smoothly. The Clarostats I have don't; feel a bit gritty.

Conversely, I am mucho interested in the Bournes pots ApexJr. has. By all accounts (have read) here, they're a winner.

I think you'll find the folks around here don't fall for that "golden ear" Hi-Fi
hokum. The resistors just need to be flame proof in the PS [mostly] and the others are bone simple carbon film at 1/2 Watt.

The Sonic Craft site didn't give dimensions or much data at all and they get
clients willing to part with $6 per resistor! That takes faith and faith seems
to be a product of a predetermined belief rather than measurable results.

No offense intended. No experience with those parts either.

You can't do better than Dale resistors in my experience. No illegible color band codes either! I'm old and feeble and going blind..

I've used the PRP GP1 resistors in a few builds (available from West Labs whilst you're buying your Clarostats), although not in any Wreck-style builds.

Very nice, very quiet, and in my opinion don't have that stereotypical 'cold' metal film sound. These can pretty much drop in where you'd have had carbon film in a design, whereas the Dale MFs tend to impart their own particular sound, which is essential at certain points in certain builds.

The abra site is very interesting and has a great price on the PEC pots, OMG. However, the PEC pots they list are linear taper, not audio, which makes it a deal breaker. But nice thought. 8)
