The use paralleled caps is an interesting point. Two different types of caps are used, and this occurs on two amps. That says there is perhaps more going on than just 0.02 vs. 0.04uF. I'm pretty sure there was some previous discussion on this, but KF might have been going for some tonal complexity here.

Either that, or it's just at handy way to up a cap, when the next step on the ladder is too high.
Say, to go from 22nF to 24nf or 22nf to 30nf. Or if you have a cap that has a certain frequency response, you could augment that with another cap of a certain type, say a ceramic type for more bite on the treble.

This is exactly what I was referring to.greekie wrote:Or if you have a cap that has a certain frequency response, you could augment that with another cap of a certain type, say a ceramic type for more bite on the treble.

I've tried it and I don't recall hearing a significant difference.
To my ear silver mica caps seem to be brighter than ceramic caps, there could be that effect at play?

I generally do that in power supplies. Ad some film and/or ceramic in parallel with the aluminium electrolytes. If not anything else, it's good mojo.martin manning wrote:This is exactly what I was referring to.greekie wrote:Or if you have a cap that has a certain frequency response, you could augment that with another cap of a certain type, say a ceramic type for more bite on the treble.

It's funny. Apparently Ken voided the warranty on this amp. One of the original owners modified the circuit (Reason why??) and Ken was informed and was very unhappy about it. Eventually the same owner restored everything to its right place but the warranty was no more...
That's what I was told anyway, by a friend of Ken's a couple day's ago, along with some other hilarious tales.

The mixing of different caps can be fun: the sound becomes more 3D, "wider" and sometimes you ghet an almoist phasey vibe so to say.
This also works in non TW-amps!

You missed the 500K volume pot, right?
Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?

Rooster how did you know there is a 500K volume pot?
