Check out the difference a mic makes!

Post by dogears »

I finally got around to trying out my Royer R121 mic in to my Millenia Audio mic pre. This is a 30 second test clip where I miced the Hermida Thiele port 1X12 by placing the ribbon back about 2 1/2 feet. Not on axis with the G1265 but kind of in between the ports and the speaker so I got both recorded. No EQ at all, no delay, just a touch of 2.5sec reverb in mix. Sounds pretty sweet, no??

BTW, this is a quasi- Bluesmaster HRM....

editHere are 2 more short takes on this tune. Btw, the tune is kickin' and a nice full length original that I am working on with my friend Didier....

Hermida and R121 (just verb) http://www.scottlernermusic.com/2007/He ... 1Test2.mp3

Glaswerks small 1X12 w/1265 and SM57 (delay and verb) http://www.scottlernermusic.com/2007/Sa ... nBack2.mp3 (dig the bum note at :31!!!)

Sounds great to me but that's through the cheapo speakers at work. There is a certain clarity that I think I'm hearing that is very nice.

What's 'quasi' HRM/BM? I'm about to start the audio portion of my new build and I think what I plan on doing is 'quasi' HRM/BM (basically HRM w/ BM PI but Skyliner EQ..at least that's the plan). Just curious what that meant.

Sounds sweet, yes (you always do)!

However, without anything to compare it to, it's impossible for my untrained ears to hear anything different about this particular clip.

Any chance you could put up a similar clip with another mic setup for comparison?

A ribbon mic is very hard to beat! Have you tried a combo of a dynamic up close and that ribbon in the room? Yummy! And is that clip with OD + PAB? Very pleasing fat sound.

Same cab, close miced with an SM57. I had to add a little 800-900 hz and roll some highs!!! There is EQ on this and there is a little delay too... But, you can hear it is not as "musical"

Yep... OD and PAB. I did try this morning mixing the SM57 and R121. I wasted 30 minutes... LOL I need to get the distances right for phase purposes. This clip I posted was an accident as I only recorded 30 seconds as a test. I noticed I did not arm the second track woth the SM but still R121! So I only had the R121 recorded. My next attempts at mixing were not as pleasing ot me as the single R121. Could be the Thiele ports though. They like to be miced.

Forgot to comment on the cabs. For lack of a better term - very "direct" sounding. Are those small footprint Thiele cabs?

Thanks! Yes, the single SM57 is definately more harsh and less alive.

Yes, there's a warmth to the mids that just gets lost with the SM-57. Sounds great as always Scott.

It IS a huge difference, even through my PC speakers, but let's face it, it's an $80 mike vs. a $1200 mike. I'd hope that there'd be a big difference.

Bob, the comparison is not apples vs apples. The Royer is micing the Hermida Thiele cab from 3 feet away. The SM57 clip is close miced. Huge difference there. The point is the Thiele cab needs some distance to get the port tuning tone. Close micing the Thiele with either mic is not so good. The clip I just added of the SM57 was close micing the same speaker in an open back and sounds nice as well, better than close micing the Hermida.
