I just finished up a home brew 6G3 and it has the same issue with the volume controls. It's an angry little bastard!
At 1 it's not loud enough.
At 2 it's plenty loud.
At 3 the cops are on the way.
I'll have to try the CTS 1M Audio's.

Maybe I am misunderstanding something but, tell me if I am on the right track.

A 10% taper pot will achieve 10% of the total resistance value at half rotation.

A 30% taper pot will achieve 30% of the total value at half rotation.

Wouldn't a 30% pot be more touchy at lower volumes?

Yes it would.

The CTS is 10%.

The Alpha is 15%.

The Alpha is touchier.

Not sure where I got the 30% number from....

I have a PEC and CTS that may work better.

I'm really liking the sound so far.

Damn, now I'm needing 10% CTS - it took forever getting the 30% ones that work so good on the ODS Dumbles  They work fine though for now - a bit more range going from zero to hero might be useful. I keep a look out for a pair. Found some I think, will have to wait till Monday now :)

It really depends on the circuit. And this is a hot one.

Tom,
Antique electronic supply has them https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/p ... rand%3DCTS
so does Watts.
AES has better price.

Not sure about the taper though.
maybe someone can chime in on that.

You'd want this one: https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/R-VC-MA. Pretty sure it's 10% taper. The difference between this and the Alphas is that it's a true log curve. Alphas aren't, which is why they come on so fast.

+1. This is where the standard 10% CTS audio pot really works well.

Jelle
I agree with this. I do a lot of home, late night playing, so I throw in 10% tapers in for all of my master volume pots (I generally save the 30% tapers for the tonestack).

Have any of you guys tried a cold bias on the 6V6's to reduce head room?

Right now the power tubes are at 12w per tube at idle.
With B+1 @ 377vdc

I haven't tried it yet because it will require different power resistors.

Or a lower gain tube in V1 or V2?

I have to turn it up quite loud before it breaks up and that is with a humbucker guitar.

Should I sin and put a master volume in it?

So I played around with a JJ 12AT7 tube today.

First I subbed it for V1 with a 12AX7 in V2.

Earlier break up with some clean tones down lower but it is a dirty clean.
You can modify it some with your guitar vol.

Turned up it sounded pretty good.

I only have one 12AT7 so then I tried it in V2,

Much earlier breakup, not as loud.

Wouldn't be bad in the right circumstance where you need more distortion than volume.

I think I like it better in V1.

I may have a 12AY7 around here some place to try that.

Tom, if you want breakup at a lower volume, build an Airbrake like attenuator. :-)
