#124 sprague atom TVA 1628 replacement.

Post by Thenewguy »

I'm just starting a #124 build and I can't find a replacement or a substitute for the Sprague Atom, TVA 1628 ,350V, 300µF capacitors. Does anyone here have a suggestion or a workaround for this?

you can use 220uF's instead if you cant get 300's. F&T do a nice 220uF :D
or get radial caps and make some different holes on your power board.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have been thinking about using the 220's by f&t, I've seen them used on other amp builds. I wasn't too sure how crucial it was to stick with the 300's. This is most likely what I will do. I just needed someone to confirm. Are there any other changes that need to be made or are they a direct swap?

Just a direct swap. #102 ODS uses 220's so that was my rational when I couldn't find 300's :D

you could always clip in a pair of 80uf's in parallel if you wanted to hear if there's a noticeable difference.

Are you building a 100w amp? if you're building a 50w then you could argue that the main filtering should be halved anyway.

Rubycon and Nichicon both make a 270uf 450v snap in cap. I believe you can find them at Mouser.

I've used the F&T 220 & 22 uF caps on my filterboard. They are not the cheapest, but very reliable. Made in Germany, I suppose (that's what they say on their web page). Well, I can't ask for more... :D
I can't see any advantage to pay 4 times more for Sprague.

Sprague is not the same quality as they used to be in my experience. F&T has never given me any problems.

Radials are cheaper, more plentiful, and tend to perform better if you can make them work with your layout.
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them

Agreed 100% the ubiquity of SMPS in cpus and all other forms of electronics have really made radials last way longer, way better ESR, way better in every way...

Yes, lets drill some holes in the Fender doghouse :D :D :D
BTW, is that the reason for the double 47uF layout on the PB?

Another vote for F and Ts. They are the best caps you can get these days and their cap cans are also the best. They aren't too bad price-wise and I have had better results with them than the newer (last 15 years) Spragues.

Has anyone done the 100 watt build with any of the suggestions, and care to elaborate on how you feel about the route you went?

For me personaly no F&T's. I don't like the sound of etched foil electrolytic caps in the power supply. I mostly use Mundorf and sometimes others with smooth foil.
They are a little bigger in size though.
