DC plant wires are still being somewhat laced in ISP/cable hub headends. They don’t use zip ties, everything tied off using the waxy rope.

I just use it because I think it looks nice. But apparently lacing is longer lasting than nylon zip ties, and less prone to cutting into the wires' jackets than zip ties. These are not likely to be reasons to use lacing in home-built gear, though. In industry, zip ties have the huge economic advantage that they're much faster than lacing, and don't need anywhere near as much skill and training as lacing does. So there's a big economic incentive to use zip ties in everything that doesn't need to last just past the warranty period.

Man, those zip ties will cut you up working inside a rack. Some cutters leave a sharp edge when shearing off the excess. -Another good thing about lacing!
