Yeah, I don't think there's much value in SE of having a tube recto. Seems just to help drop voltage, which a series resistor would do. But a lot of the Edcor trannies rj was looking at already have the 5V winding. Waste not, want not ...Zippy wrote:You're forgetting the socket and tube... In truth, isn't the voltage already in the keep-the-6V6-happy range and a lil' low for the Big Guys? If you want to drop voltage, you can similarly wire for SS rectification and add a "choke resistor" to drop some series voltage.

Re: Developing the DIY "Champ" for first time builders
I am generally pleased that folks throw out that their ideas. Trying to corral a public thread usually isn't effective anyway and I am learning more all the time.... learning is the ultimate goal.
I have the original idea of the simple amp intact and I think I'll have those parts together this weekend and out the door Monday or Tuesday.
The upgraded amp seems to be where the biggest interest is. The combo cabinets arrived yesterday but I've been stalling to make up those chassis because I really like having the part (transformers in this case) in my hand as opposed to a drawing of what it supposed to look like. I will go ahead and do everything except the tranny holes this weekend. I just received the shipping notice from Edcor so those will be here early next week and I plan to get them off before I have to take another travel adventure later in the month.
For the Super Size Single, that project is kinda all over the map, but in a healthy way. It looks impossible to grasp one set of iron and declare it as "the answer" because there are a lot of good ideas that have been presented. What I can do is offer up everything or whatever parts you want from me plus the option to have Edcor drop ship you the tranny set of your choice. Be aware that Edcor has gotten really busy so this isn't necessarily a fast option. There have been a few other tranny options mentioned that might be a good solution as well. I think we will generate some cool threads and threads to follow with these amps.
Thanks for all the input, I think it's all good stuff.

Re: Developing the DIY "Champ" for first time builders
Here is a look at prototype #1 - it really is a bit of an ugly duckling, but served it's purpose very well. This amp is not real loud and is easily overdriven. I can push it into overdrive with my Strat and actually haven't tried a humbucker through it yet.
For those that want to build this basic amp, I expect that the low end output transformer is a big part of the Brown tone this little amp puts out. If you want a clean sound, I doubt this thing will ever get there. It is cool sounding, but not all that clean. There are many guys much better than I am at dialing these in so I won't say that is the final word yet, but I am very sure that it will never be especially loud. When things slow down I'll run the scope on the various stages and see what it looks like.
For the future chassis in the simple amp they will be similar in layout but the output transformer is moved over and a few things shifted here and there to balance out the look and keep the wire runs logical and short, etc..
I'll also post up the pictures of the cabinets that just came in yesterday as well... I am quite pleased with the look of these and I am hoping that you guys find the ultimate speakers to work well with these amps.

The kit includes a cab? Or is that an option?
John
I need more practice, not more gear.

Re: Developing the DIY "Champ" for first time builders
The cab was an option and I hate looking for cabs when I can get one that is already drilled for the Pocket Rocket and is nicely done.
Poor picture but I was in a hurry

Sorry, I should have been more specific. My question was directed to RJ.M Fowler wrote:The cab was an option and I hate looking for cabs when I can get one that is already drilled for the Pocket Rocket and is nicely done.

I am slowly getting everything in order so that you'll know exactly what I offer with the Eagle amp. It turns out that it shares the same chassis blank with the V-2 amp so the image that Mark Fowler gave us is a glimpse at the head cabinet that is available.
I worked this morning to post this up on my web site... that helps me to keep things organized for myself and easily available for folks. For TAG forum builders I offer things for a better price than the web site indicates and make it all available to you first.

I didn't post anything up on the Supre yet but the story is starting to come together on the Basic and the Premium. I've just about got a complete BOM done. and I'll post that here when it looks complete.

Mark you are an amp building machine. The little Rocket circuits are just great sounding with very little tweaking required.M Fowler wrote:rj I figured I better get that Pocket Rocket done if I am going to get more of your kits.

I think you might be way ahead of your time with the green knobs...
