I use a cheaper DMM too, in the US$40 price bracket.
Two (2) things to watch when buying a cheaper DMM.
1) Make sure it comes with decent leads, insulated to 1000V. How much is your life worth.
(Gratuitous insult: Even some of you duds have to be worth more than 40 bucks, hell, even drummers are worth that much).
2) Some of the cheap units do not have a low battery indicator or worse (like the one I have) have a low battery indicator that comes on, way too late. As the battery dies the internal reference voltage drops, and the meter starts to read high. Bloody annoying when trying to set bias on an amp.
Cheers,
Ian

Here is a decent inexpensive-not-cheap meter. I have one of these. It isn't my go-to meter. You wouldn't be embarrassed to show this one. $34 plus shipping.
