Looks like a lower power 6V6. Lower transconductance, higher plate resistance. Lower Pd, 8.5W vs 12W.
Needs higher OT primary impedance, maybe 10-11K vs 8K for a pair in AB1.

I've built 6V6 amps, like most of us, but not a 6K6 amp. If I were doing a 6K6 amp the only things I would do different than 6V6 would be the OT primary and watch the plate dissipation.

Interestingly the 6K6 screen dissipation is 2.8W vs 2.0W for the 6V6. This may be because the 6K6 is an octal version of an older design, the 6-pin type 41, and those tubes look real tuff!

I looked into a 6K6 5E3 or at least swapping into a 6V6 amp, never tried as my amps run too hot, but there's a bit of info if you google of people doing 6K6 PP amps. Another 6*6 type I was always curious about is the 6F6GT.

Yes, I built one for a church where they send the signal thru a PA system. It's been used several years and it sounds great and cuts thru a mix well where either a piano or pipe organ is being used with a full band.

It has relay switching between clean/OD and for midboost. It has an FX loop and PPIMV.

They needed a "zero volume" (think that's the phrase) stage. I've also heard it hooked up to a cab with an Emminence Cannabis Rex.

The SCH file has the PT and B+ rail. Used a 275-0-275 PT and a old stock 5Y3GT. The power tubes should probably share a 100uf/100v cathode cap instead of the 22uf.

This is also a D'Mars amp using 6K6's but is not the exact one that I posted the schematic of. This was played thru the OD channel using a Cannabis Rex.

This particular amp uses a 275-0-275 PT with 150ma. It's cathode biased with a 330ohm/10w resistor.

I can use 6K6 with 5Y3GT
I can use 6V6 with 5Y3GT, 5V4 or GZ34
I can use 5881/6L6 with 5V4 or Gz34 or solid state

No changes other then changing power tubes and rectifier tube

I've been wanting to build a 6K6 amp for some time, but the higher impedance OT hasn't been the easiest thing to source. I've got a bunch of those tubes, and used some in a THD BiValve amp - they sounded fantastic. Great clean to crunch, though with lower volumes. The THD is a Class A amp, and I've wanted to build a P-P amp for more punch and less compression. What custom transformer are you using?

I've used a Hammond 1620 and I've used an inexpensive 20 w PP that I think is for a Deluxe or Tweed Deluxe?

A friend of mine uses 6k6's in a couple of his amps that are for 6v6's and has no problem, he likes the 6k's a lot. They are a little quieter. Don't think you need to worry about the OT. One of the amps is a champ. Works great.

I built a sort-of 5E3 using 6K6's ... the plate voltages were just over 300V, 6K6's are pentodes, so they are a bit different sounding than 6V6's

I did a bunch of OT swapping and ended up using a 6.6k MPS OT at double impedance 8 ohm load into the 4 ohm tap ...

It's a sweet little amp ... one friend used it with an A/B box for his lead tone on stage, another used it for lead tones on a recording.

If a tube amp doesn't sound good it ain't the tubes. Go for it!

Hi Billy,

What attachment did you use for the swirl finish on the chassis?

That looks really good and professional.
