Little Walter Amps

Post by M Fowler »

Not sure why Phil B. states his new 89 series amp is a 100 watt amp when he is running four 6L6GC with GZ34 tube rectifier. Basically a Fender Bassman or Marshall JTM45/100 but tuned for pedal steel guitar.

Even his KT120 amp uses tube recto rather then diodes.

Are those tubes some new 2nd world 6L6 design? They look like the old Sylvania 6CA7 fatboys in a 6550 envelope.

Yeah these tubes don't look like 6L6's to me either.

Looks like JJ KT88's in the first picture (round holes in the plate) and JJ KT66's in the 2nd picture (rectangular holes in the plate).

So maybe just experimenting amps in photos and regular production amps are 6L6GC as advertised.

Is this the 5B6 best thing since sliced bread guy? So this is no longer in the least 5B6 inspired I'm guessing? That tube rectifier is being asked to do a lot of work, must be biased pretty cold. Probably more reliable to use ss diodes and a sag resistor?

Yeah this one is more like a Fender Bassman 5F6a but in 100w package or Marshall JTM 45/100 with tone stack more favorable to Steel guitar.

Owners of this 89 series 100w have very favorable reports but then so do Fender Blues Jr and other questionable amps. :)

Phil B seems to like somewhat under-rated iron in the power supply. The 5B6-based amp used Hammond and Classictone Deluxe Reverb replacement power transformers with 6L6GC's. I was talking with a friend who is a pro Steel player with really good ears about how good the old Princeton Reverbs with the Champ PT can sound for steel as long as you don't push them too hard. Maybe the sag from the overtaxed power supply is part of the "magic"?

Supposidely the GZ34 is good for 250ma...I gotta think though that thing is going to go through a lot of rectifier tubes if you're pushing it hard with any regularity.

^ #672 . . . He's sold that many of these very home-made looking things that don't appear to make any concessions at all to modern concepts of product safety and liability? How can he even get insurance?
