how 'bout that Kate Bush ?

Post by Leo_Gnardo »

OK not guitar or amp heavy* but I've been digging her music for over 3 decades. No live shows since 1979, and there's a big press flap about her 22 show series at Hammersmith Odeon that started today. Reviews should be appearing in the upcoming hours. I'm sure it's absolutely brilliant.

One of my tour mates tried turning me on to her music 1981. Voice thru a flanger, no thanks, too weird for me. Took a while but I started to appreciate her quirky but solid style. Now in her mid 50's still looks great & has to dial the key of her earlier works down a click or two but that's very forgivable.

Any Kate fans out there?

* however some heavy duty players are on her albums. Dave Gilmour, Tony Levin, like that. If she called, who could say no?

True that, also in 1994 when I started to hear Tori Amos on the radio, I thought it was some new music by Kate, what with the odd modes on the piano, until I heard the vocal. Which wasn't bad, not at all. Tori's a great artist too. But it wasn't Kate, oh well.

Press expects her albums to pop back into the top 100 in Great Britain, pumped by this concert series. Wish I could be there. I've only done shows at the Hammersmith Odeon (now called Apollo), never seen one from the audience view.

I have always been a big fan of hers....first time I saw her was on Saturday Night live..with Eric Idle hosting. Actually, Nick, she is a protoge of David Gilmore...she was the lttile girl that lived down the block from him. I have tons of her fanzine "Homeground" which may be out of print now. What a fantastically talented and beautiful woman...she started producing herself by the 2nd album(Loinheart). She was one of the first to make deft use of the synclavier also. Too bad her dislike of flying led to so few visits to the "colonies"

If you try, I bet we can come up with 10 female artists who basically were Kate Bush ripoffs (without really trying).

I'll start with:
Sinead O'Connor
Tori Amos

Big fan since 78.
Hell, even John Lydon admitted that he's had a big thing for her forever.

Within Temptstion

Kate was also heavily influenced by David Bowie's showmanship. She would often change clothes for each song.

Tickets for these shows sold out in 20 mins. Scalpers are getting £1000-1500.

I have all her vinyl ripped if someone can host 16GB.

Two less obvious Kate Bush influences...K.D. Lang said that the whole reason she started singing was hearing Kate on the radio...also Paula Cole, who mentioned Kate during her short acceptance speach for her grammy for " I Don't Wanna Wait"...If anyone can believe it..I've had freinds that say they don't like Kate because"she sings too high"...what numbsculls!

The one thing I want for Christmas - and have for years - is a Live at the Hammersmith Odeon DVD. I'd settle for a DVD from this new run.

/OK, also want a DVD of the recent Python thing, but that's lower priority.

She's fantastic! Btw, led zeppelin 4 is NOT the best disc to be spinnin' in the car on that all-important first date. Her "Sensual World" record is!

IMO, The feminist movement of the mid 70's allowed women a new expression, in music. Rather than a jiggle and hairdo in a short skirt women came out as powerful, talented, in charge, sexy and just a bit scary. Leading the charge:

Rip her to shreds

Gloria

and bringing the party home Cindy and Kate:

All between 1974-6, It was a great time to be 15 and love powerful women and rock!

These two are also worth checking out (although I wouldn't go as far as saying they ripped off Kate, but no doubt they were both influenced by her):

Annie Clark (I think she also performs under the name St. Vincent) - pretty good guitarist, as well.

And:

Imogen Heap - eclectic, interesting stuff

But Kate's still the coolest! 8)
