Black tweed

Post by xtian »

I've seen a few cabinets covered in black tweed lately, and they look really, really cool. Where can we buy the material?

Are you talking about this?

Before I built all my own amps, I used to own a Peavey Classic 30 in black tweed-ish/carbon fiber looking tolex. It was pretty sharp looking.

No, but that's very nice!

I just exchanged emails with Mojotone--they said they apply typical blonde tweed, then dye it black.

Oh that makes sense. You could probably mix some black dye in with shellac and kill two birds with one stone.

I think you asked about this material:

As far as I know, this tolex made by Kayline. You just need to find a local dealer.

You can take tweed and stain it virtually any color- mohawk brand stain works really well and you can control intensity by diluting the stain down with alcohol, do a few sample runs, notate ratios.. The secret to applying it is no runs or drips, work flat for consistency... Once its settled in - seal with lacquer, no tint..
