Which Choke?

Post by The Ballzz »

I'm designing/building an amp and need a choke. The combinations of Henry, MA & DCR specs are all over the place for supposedly claimed same use. Some vendors sell list/sell them according to which power tubes are used, some by which amp (with no actual specs listed) and others by spec only. I'm just a little bit more than confused here?

Here's a link to my build thread of the amp in question:

Thanks For Any/All Help,

Calculate your current usage: https://thesubjectmatter.com/calcptcurrent.html

My guess at your circuit gave a result of ~85mA.

Here is a good choice: https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/f ... al-showman

Thanks folks for all the input! That one looks pretty darned close, but I think I might go for the actual Hammond unit below, though it may in fact be the same unit, without labeling? I don't want the current capability to be too high and stiffen the supply too harshly. This 90mA one may be pretty OK, depending on what the actual current draw is:

Although if willing to drop the Henrys to 3.5 or even 3, I get a choice of 150mA or 100 mA, respectively here:

And if willing to bump up to 5 Henrys, I get 120mA here:

All the DCR ratings are faily similar around 105, except for the 3 Henry unit at 85 DCR!

With all that said, I think my current plan i to go ahead and build the amp, "without" the choke, get all my voltages into the ballpark that I'm shooting for and then actually measure the current draw with a loop cranked through the amp and see where I end up. Of course, the amp may sound just the way I want without the choke anyway!
