Hicks Mender I

Post by xtian »

Client just dropped off a Twin Reverb for tune up. Have y'all seen a Hicks Mender before? It plugs into the V1+V2 of Fender two-channel amps and allows user to switch between clean and overdriven with a footswitch.

Interesting! Is the weight of that whole assembly held in place by only the friction fit of the 18 pins? Also, rather peculiar the circular cutouts on the underside, where the tubes plug back in are dissimilar in size...

Yeah, the holes are different sizes. Click thru to Google Images, and you'll find some detailed photos. This unit is held in place by a little L bracket screwed into the cabinet.

Okay. Well, that feels a _little_ more secure... 🤣

I think the guy who made it was David Hicks, I think I had a circuit of it years ago, but I wasn't really into making one.

I don't know if the Mender was broken, but it didn't work well. Clean mode was OK, but when switched to OD mode, volume dropped radically.

I don't know anything about the Hicks Mender but here is a thread I found. Maybe the trim pot for the gain was turned up?

I saw that trim pot. It didn't make much difference.

I was going to suggest maybe getting in contact with David Hicks, but after a quick google search for him in Sand Springs Oklahoma, I found his obituary. It looks like he passed away last September. :/

I had corresponded with David Hicks a few years ago, he was a good guy. That's sad to hear.
