JTM45 KT66's - too close?

Actually, I'm gonna change my tune upon further investigation..

At the moment, the way the tubes are orientated, the anodes? are facing towards each other, see pic:

This can't be helping the situation as it seems the point on the tube that is generating the most heat are facing each other.

I'll look at rotating the tube socket 90deg and I will also fix a 2mm aluminium sheet (135x52) on to the chassis to allow me to space them further apart.

At the moment they are 5mm! apart which I will increase to 15-20mm.

Remove the one blue can cap put that inside the chassis on end wall.

Put the tube socket in the can cap hole for increased spacing but then your cooking your recto tube.

Or run different tube type 5881, 6L6GC, or EL34.

So time got the better of me and I got this sorted.

I decide to install a plate to space the KT66's further apart today since I had a bit of time between Christmas & NY's.

Here's the before:

I also rotated the socket by 45deg so the anodes aren't facing towards each other.

Just a note, the thing you circled as the "anode" is actually the getter flash and has nothing to do with the electrical function of the tube (other than keeping the vacuum solid). The anode is the big grey box in the center of the tube surrounding all of the other electrical goodies.

If you get a chance, try the chinese KT66s in it. I had a JTM45 clone with those and it sounded awesome.

We were all new to the game at some point. My JTM45 was my favorite amp for a long time. The only reason I sold it was because of medical bills. I'm hoping to build another one soon.

I have a feeling in a couple of years when 'I've built another 5 amps', I'll come back to the JTM45 as my favourite.
