Fantastic, and I love the Monterey logo! Great idea!

BTW, in point of detail, the Monterey model was sold under Ford's Mercury brand. Very cool.

Thanks guys for sharing the effort to tweak this build. I have hiss in all my Wreck builds except the Rockets and once I recognize how stinking loud the amp is turned up the hiss makes sense...

Great Job Vincent, I'll tweak the documentation and create a good 2 hole Liverpool schematic.

That Monterey emblem is very cool. I've been saving the grill emblem from an old Cadillac to put on the front of one of my amps.

FWIW - My own Liverpool 15 is one of my best sound amps and it is incredibly loud...

15 Watt Lerpoole sound clip

Post by RJ Guitars »

I have a sonic progress report for my original 15W LP build that started out this thread... A live video clip by my eldest son, working the amp in the tone zone for us. Most of the time he is a pastor up in Colorado but he "moon-lights" a little bit for me as an amp tester and demo guy. He's not bad on the guitar and each one of his clips is better as I figure out what kind of equipment to provide for him to record with. Curious what you think and what we ought to request from him in the future to demo this amp.

Video Clip of 15W Liverpool Style build

My son did another demo of my 15W Liverpool build. I specifically asked him to add some clean sounds. In this video, all the tracks were recorded with the same guitar and amp. I am pleased to with the results and especially pleased to have someone else do the demo for me. enjoy! rj

Those el84's really have a snarl. BIG FAT tone on the chords! Sounds great.

Be sure your tinfoil hat has a good low impedance ground.

I know I am reviving an old thread, but I am in the process of ironing the wrinkles out of one of these. First impression is that this is putting out way more than 15 Watts, but in a great harmonic way. The clean to mean is very nice and it is easy to find the spot on the guitar volume where you can dig in and get just a bit more meat when you need it. I changed some of the resistors in the first stage to 1W carbon comps, and there was a noticeable lowering of the hiss. I have a few more resistors coming from DigiKey to try in a few other places. Mine is a bit on the bright end, so I am playing around with the coupling caps a bit. This may be somewhat attributable to me. I tend to play on the bridge pickup and just work the volume on the guitar a lot, so taking just a bit of highs off at the amp generally works for me, but I need a bit more off the top, or learn how to use the tone controls on my guitar better while I am playing. When I use my pedalboard, I have 40' of cable already, but I am open to other suggestions to darken it up just a smidgen.

The only odd thing is that the master volume works backwards (I think I can sort that one) and is very non-linear. There is a very small sweet spot. Suggestions?

And kudos and thanks to RJ for making this kit available. Life has been busy and I have not built an amp in a few years now even though I lurk here frequently. This is a a wonderful sounding amp at a great price that is fairly easy to build.

Robert, I missed this when you posted that last note. Glad you got it fired up and making music. It's really stunning how loud and aggressive these things are... hardly seems possibly considering you use transformers half the size of a regular Wreck build.

I am a broken record on bringing the volume down because I really like attenuators. I would agree the MV does have a small sweet spot and I think you get a little wider window with the attenuator before you start to lose the magic.

Would you be willing to post a couple photos and also I am curious what kind of voltages you are getting? This is unique in that it has the small transformers and the 6V6 tubes. I really like the sound of the 15W Edcor OT with a pair of EL84's but haven't heard one yet with a pair of 6V6GT's.
