Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Gotterdammerung (Wagner), live from the Met. Pardon me if I left out some umlauts, tried turning my keyboard sidewards & typing colons but needless to say it didn't work. I'm also getting a clue as to where Mahler ahem "borrowed" some themes he used in his 2nd symphony. Then again Gus Mahler was an opera conductor before he started writing symphonies, so he got to hear 'em all. Hey this is what I get for listening to Public Radio & too lazy to change the station or pop in a CD. Nonetheless, good for a change of pace. Wagner & Mahler were both rockers ahead of their time. Imagine if they had electric bands... whoeee!

I trust you proceeded it with the first three cycles of Der Ring des Nibelungen? Which you would have begun three nights ago? You're probably quite fatigued by now.

The Unanswered Question
Phonology, syntax, semantics. The first three are mind blowing. He takes Mahler up on many counts. I had a musical education before I saw these lectures in the '80s but this blew that away.
This changed my life.
Watch all 6.

Actually they've run one per week since 3 weeks ago. Today's the end of "Opera at the Met on Saturday" season. Heck maybe you can pick up the rest of it, seeing as you're in upstate NY. The broadcast is on WAMC out of Albany but they have @ 24 repeater stations that reach from Westchester all the way to the Canadian border. Plus online @ WAMC.org.NickC wrote:I trust you proceeded it with the first three cycles of Der Ring des Nibelungen? Which you would have begun three nights ago? You're probably quite fatigued by now.
Good sounding Brunnhilde in this production. No edgy voice.
I got a helluva story some years ago from guitarist Paul Pesco. His father was a pro opera singer & participated in the Wagner Fest at Bayreuth. So he got little Paul a part as one of the 12 Nibelungen. He was the only one who wasn't a blond. As guardians of the ring they were all "supposed" to have golden hair to match. Dare to be different. These days you might find Paul with blue hair. And so it goes...

I'd love to take you up on this... Crikeys Miles, one more reason I must get hi-speed. I'll never be able to download this on dialup. It's all I can do to keep up with the dots & dashes.Reeltarded wrote:Phonology, syntax, semantics. The first three are mind blowing. He takes Mahler up on many counts. I dunno.. i think you could maybe watch it low speed on..
I could always snail mail you a disk with the whole series. Let me get my sick machine running and I will compile the thing. It is amazing. Leonard Bernstein is my idol. I would have walked through life completely uncivilized.
The depth challenged me to remember all the stuff drugs made me forget. No kidding. ^^ that series is worth living for.

Re: What're you listening to right now??
Ah yes, Lenny Bernstein sort of brought Mahler back from obscurity with his 1960's performances & recordings. I think LB said something like "Mahler tells us the truth about the human condition, something that is too terrible to know." Maybe it's in those lectures.Reeltarded wrote:Leonard Bernstein is my idol. I would have walked through life completely uncivilized.

Now for something a little less profound...
This morning, NPR aired an interview with Yngwie & how he nicked Paganini etc etc. I'm sure those who wish to can pick this up on NPR.org website.
