What Phil said, short of a top hat and white silk scarf no one will hold it against you for being nicely dressed for an interview, shows you want the job. But seeing how you're from Texas they might be disappointed if you don't show up in a suit with cowboy boots and a bolo tie.

I'm not sure if you were asking about the overcoat for looks or cold, but yeh, it'll be cold, bring a wool hat and a scarf too. Seeing what's coming I'd bring hiking boots just to get around in case they really get 2+ feet.

Yeah, you can't go wrong with Dockers, shirt and tie.
Casual leather shoes as well.

Not sure about the sport coat these days.

Good Luck Cliff!

FWIW I would NEVER go on an interview without a suit on. I think it's unprofessional to do so. If you really want the job it should be worth it to you to put a suit on. Unless the interviewer told you specifically not to......I would wear one.

I am on the East coast BTW. My company is in Dedham, MA probably just south of Framingham. I work from home in NJ though. Yes I wore a suit to my interview!

EDIT:Actually I just googled it and Framingham is about 20 miles west of Dedham

I was in Framingham and Medway about 20+ years ago. Didn't live there, but just went for some technical training. Of course Bose is located there on The Mountain and a little steakhouse there called Ken's Casual. Ken used to have the best salad dressings!!! You might have eaten some of Ken's Dressings since they offer them in a buttload of restaurants and fast food joints across the US.

Good luck Cliff

I was beginning to think that I was the only one here still thinking this way, I agree 100%.

Cliff do you have any neck tattoos? We like those up here, if a sport coat would cover them up I say don't wear one. Make sure to talk as fast as possible and remember you can't smoke the green monster.

Where is this gig? Bose? Cambridge Soundworks? I'm sure they all know about the Amplified Nation...if you need a reference you just let uncle Taylor know.

I agree 100% I don't know what the atmosphere on the west coast is but I am telling you. If you are serious about the job wear a suit.

Cliff, send me a PM. I live in the city, and have always admired your guitar amp works. I'll give you a tour and as much advice as I can on the housing scene.

I should qualify my statements about the west coast. You'd probably still be expected to dress up if you were an engineer applying for a job at Boeing.

I'm speaking mainly of developer positions at startups. Really great programmers are a notoriously eccentric bunch. Guys that require their cubes to be covered with a tent because they hate fluorescent lights. Guys who insist on walking around barefoot in the office. A lot I think are borderline Asperger syndrome.

Also, the interview process at Amazon, Google, and Microsoft is extremely difficult, usually going for around eight hours. You'll need to know algorithms and data structures, big-o algorithmic complexity analysis, trees and tree traversal, both DFS and BFS, discrete math (mostly Google).

And once your skill level is ascertained, it will quickly move to puzzles to see your problem solving ability.

For example:

"A bear walks one kilometer south, then one kilometer west, then one kilometer north, arriving at his original location. What color is the bear?"

"An object in a boat, floating on a lake, is removed from the boat, and dropped into the water. It sinks to the bottom. Does the level of the lake go up, down, or stay the same?"

I'm thinking a "Bose Equipment at wholesale" if Cliff gets an employee discount.

Still want a pair of 901's.

If this is a proper formal interview, treat it as such.
Any major corporation will have an HR dept with hiring policies and procedures that they will follow.
I have heard the phrase "Hire Hard, Manage Easy" at the company I work at now.
It may only take one glance from a recruiting manager to get a check in the wrong column.

Even in a culture known to be business casual or even (gasp!) jeans-n-tshirt, wearing the appropriate attire shows that you know and can follow convention.
If you can't get a suitable coat (no pun ...) maybe at least wear a nice sweater, but certainly a formal collared shirt with a conservative tie.
Let your knowledge and qualifications be what stands out.

Best of luck to you, Cliff !
