I don't anything about EF86 tubes. Never used one or even played an amp with one as far as I know?

I only have one overdrive pedal I use into the input and it sounds good with the amp. I use a Boss digital delay in the passive effects loop and really like the tone I get ALOT. I use the delay sitting in with the band always.

Having said that, I have relay switching & honestly I don't really feel an overdrive pedal is needed for what I am wanting to play.

Ok, I found a Philips EH86 datasheet from '70's that helped for the answer.
G1=control grid, G2=screen grid and G3=suppressor grid.

The pedal question was mainly for my interest of germanium fuzzes. I can hear the potential of the TOD from the clips and believe I will need no overdrive pedals in there but I like sometime to use fuzzes while playing. They interact nicely with guitars volume pot.

Ok, I finally got time and changed my 50w dumble preamp into Tweed over drive special and am enjoying the result very much. I built it first with Svetlana EF86 (no 5879's where I live). Today I got the 5879's I ordered and rewired the socket. The sound is eaven better to me now. 5879 seems to give a meatier, little softer sound. EF86 is tighter but not what I was after. The D style power amp is quite stiff. I might try something other for the poweramp section. The amp has built in dumbleator and two relays controlled by footswitch (have to decide for what purpose is the other relay going to be).

I did two dry clips with EF86 and 5879 with same settings on both recordings. The playing comes from Boss loop pedal so they are identical. Everything else is the same but the tubes (and socket wiring). The EF86 has more gain and the clip was louder so I normalized both clips to have same volume. Not big difference but hearable for sure. I like the playing feel of the 5879 also more.

I'm sorry I cannot comment on the TODS, but racer FWIW I recently built a jazz amp using Sozo Blue Moldeds throughout and they sound fantastic. Very clean, warm, and slightly dark sounding. The owner reports a "glow" on the edge of each note.

Thanks Colossal, That's good news. I kinda thought that in a Tweed they might just sound good. I guess it will be up to me to do it. Adding another amp to the "list"

Thanks for the answers. Guytron seems to use two EL84's on the preamp section: http://www.amptone.com/guytrongt100.htm

The reason for asking if the EL84 would do is that the 5879 is not so easily found in this part of the world I live. The delivery will be about 3-9 weeks from USA.

EF86 is more easily available and JJ's EF806S are on production today. Have anyone tried the JJ or would that be suitable for the TOD ?

A local builder has done a couple of "DC/30"-ish amps (Barwatt, and the amp is the Kingsnake) that along with a couple other mods uses a 5879 in place of the EF86 - reasons quoted being more manageable levels of gain, lower price, easier availability, and less inclined to be microphonics.
