i was gonna say leaky coupling cap or bad tube but it looks like you've replaced those right?

Thanks Ian, that explains a lot.

Yeah hitch, I already try the coupling caps and they didn't help at all.

Do you guys think that putting a big resistor (say 10 watt, 1k) between the B+ supply and the choke would at least tame down the screen voltage to the tubes enough that they wouldn't red plate anymore?

I had a tech recommend this to me but I've got reservations about altering the stock circuit. Any opinions on this? Will it kill my tone?

Randall Aiken has an interesting discussion on his aikenamps.com site regarding lowering B+ using zeners and mosfets.A little more sophisticated than an high power resistor.Located in his tech notes section IIRC. ..finn
