Ported cab design....

Post by tubedogsmith »

Ok, a buddy got a Glaswerks ported 1X12 with an EV12L in it and the thing sounded spectacular. Not just with a dumble style amp but it sounds great with TW, marshall and even fender type designs. I've got a Hermida cab that is the same size and looks the same but I'm not getting anywhere near the sound out of mine. I've swapped 3 different 12L's into so I know it's not the speaker. I've tried putting a couple different types of insulation in it in several different configurations as well with no success. The Glaswerks has some slats mounted on the inside of the back which I'm sure are adding to the sound but I can't believe it's making "all" the difference. Any ideas.

I think those Hermida cabs are actually tuned incorrectly.

I had a 1x12 front-ported, and the C and C# notes played on the A string of my guitars were about twice as loud and boomy as the notes surrounding them. Those notes cause some kind of resonance overload in my cab.

I emailed Alf (very nice guy and excellent customer service) and he sent me his personal 1x12 ported with a broken-in G12-65, and it has the exact same problem.

I've used EVM 12L, Scumback, and Weber speakers---same issue. Doesn't matter which guitar or where I'm playing or whether or not the cab is elevated.

Weirder still, I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue.

Cab sounds great in all other respects.

Just curious... Did you try different amps and guitars through the cab too?

Yes, I've changed all variables. Happens with Tele, LP, 18 watt, and Red Plate.

how about room??

Did you play the cab in different rooms? could be that the cab emphasize an acoustics problem.

This is why an awful lot of ported cabs are simply clones of good ones that someone else did. All currrent Carvin bass cabs are clones, for example. You can do math until you go blue, but it's more informative to tune it by ear, then analyze what you've done.

Yes, we actually moved in May. Different rooms, different houses, same resonance.

I was looking at Hermida's site the other day.

His prices are certainly reasonable.

Like $275 for a ported 2 x 12.

But are you saying his design isn't very good sonically?

No, the cab sounds great in all respects except mine emphasizes certain frequencies (see 2nd post in thread).

With this cab I'm getting a terrible sound. I haven't given up yet. I'm going to try a few other speakers and some more insulation. Any of these three speakers sound great front mounted(like the Hermida cab) in an old '77 100 watt Boogie combo. How much science went into that cab?!?!

The one I compared to was the regular one I think, it was the same size anyway.
