Eminence Legend 1218 Speaker

I've been reading through some old speaker threads and became interested in this speaker. Seems there are a couple of fellas, drpastorbob and phsyconoodler, who liked the speaker a lot. drpastorbob posted some clips of his amp using this speaker and it sounded good to me. I'm not looking for Robben Ford or any smooth jazz tone. I prefer blues, blues-rock and rock. Right now I'm using a Red, White and Blues and really like that speaker, but, it could use a little more in the highs area. Is anyone using the Eminence Legend 1218 or heard one with this amp, if so, what do you think about it?

The Eminence Legend series is Eminence's take on a replacement speaker for a vintage clean Fender-ish style amp-.. This comes from Anthony himself @ Eminence.. When you first get them they are a bit on the bright side till you bust them in.. In my experience they work well in a clean Fender Pro/Twin/ but can get a little edgy IMHO in an overdrive amp you be the judge..Not my first choice....Hope this helps!!

Try a wgs 75watt Retro 30 it has enough of a mid hump for the aggressive stuff but it doesn't get in the way of the clean tone. Nice solid lows and great highs for cleans.

what is the retro 30 based on? if it is based on anything at all.

Yes, that surely does help. From your description, it sounds like this speaker is not he right choice.

The only thing that scares me off of that speaker is it's described as being "bright" and has Celestion Vintage 30 heritage. Actually my first choice was a WGS ET65. I changed direction because I like the Red, White and Blues I have and thought I would get one to pair with it if I want to run a 2x12 cab. The RWB is a loud speaker with an SPL of 101 db and the ET65 has an SPL of 96 db. I can't see any way to run the two together without RWB completely swamping the ET65. Maybe I should just go ahead and get an ET65, run a 1x12 and call it a day.

I have a set of Legend 10" (10516) that are kinda cool. Even though they are rated at 100db ... they are not as loud as one EVM12L. But they have a nice sound to them.

"Hellhounds" on my Soundclick site in the link below was the first recording I made with my D'Lite after I built it. Give it a listen ... Legend 10s anyway.

If you still have one and want to sell it, for that price I can't go wrong giving them a try. If it doesn't work with the ODS I imagine it will work with a Marshall. Let me know what the total is, how you want to be paid and where to send it. I'll get you paid. Thanks.

Good sounding clip. Glad you posted, I happen to have 4x10 cab that has two Legend 1058 speakers and two 1028 Legend Alnico speakers. I can give them a try and it won't cost me anything. BTW, nice sounding clip, thanks.

Thanks ... I was running the trimmer a little higher than I do now so it was growling pretty good. But I think the Legends have a nice sound. When I bought the 2x10 cab, I planned on replacing them ... $50 speakers ... but still have not. I was suprised by them. Always wondered about the Emi 12s of the same flavor.

I mostly now use a 2-12 cabinet with a vintage G12-65 and an Emi Tonker. This combination gives some really nice fenderish highs along with good mids. My Tele and my Strat really shine with this combination, both clean and in OD mode. I play mostly blues and am a pretty agressive picker (probably due to my previous life as a hard rock lead guitarist), although in my clips I tried to show that I could get a variety of tones (all were done with the Emi 1218).

I still have the single-12 cabinet with the 1218 and occassionaly switch back and forth between it and the 2-12 cab. To my ears, the 1218 is very midrangy with the ODS amp, more so than the 2-12 combination I now use. It is also a very modern sounding speaker (more compressed or smooth?).

By the way, I did not care for the vintage G12-65 I have alone. It seemed too bright, but Scott Lerner (dogears) tried to tell me that some are bad and recommended buying the reissue version.

I think if you don't want to or can't sound like Scott, you have many speaker options to choose from that will give you a unique tone. If you want to listen to someone who seems to know what he is talking about and is a really great guy, listen to heistl. He is building some great sounding blues amps these days.

My apologies, I should not have dismissed the Retro 30 out of hand just because of its kinship to the Celestion Vintage 30. I went to the WGS website and listened to the clips of the Retro 30 and compared them to the ET65 clips. Not the best clips around but they were made on the same amps for clean and distorted tones. I don't have the best ears but there does indeed seem to be more clarity coming from the Retro 30 speaker and it doesn't sound overly bright(ice picky) at all. Thanks.

This clip I posted a while back is from my Bassman 10 conversion, 50 W Skyline non HRM. I used Legend 1058's per Henry's recommendation. I really like them. If I want a different flavor, I plug into my Thiele cab with a EVM12L. FYI, the Bassman 10 was a 4X10 closed back combo.

I tested three of Henry's amps and at least one of the amps used the Retro 30 in it and that speaker sounded very good. I plan to get some for a 212 cabinet.
