I'm thinking of building a Spitfire, but...
...I like the EF86 channel of my DC-30 better that the paralleled 12ax7 side. So I was thinking of just using the EF86 circuit in place of the 12ax7 V1 in an otherwise stock spitfire circuit. Would there be a problem running the EF86 into the Spitfire tone circuit? I can't see that it would be an issue but it's my understanding that the EF86 has a considerably higher output impedance than a 12ax7, and that kind of stuff is definitely not my strong point, so I thought I'd ask.

you'd have a nighthawk.
Re: I'm thinking of building a Spitfire, but...
The EF86 would have a lot more gain, and you'd have to throw it away to get the same amount of gain as the Spitfire. I think you'd be okay with the simple tone control though, the high impedance output being more of a problem with lossy tonestacks. JM2C.

Did you see this recent thread?
The foxy 18 could probably give you some fun ideas.

I like what the Foxy 18 has to offer more then the Spitfire.
The Spitfire build stock is a good performing small gig amp.

I built a Spitfire some time ago. It is a cool little amp. But after a while, I tired of it, and I rebuilt it as an AC15, EF86 channel only. The differences bertween the circuits, as I remember it, are not that big, but the AC15 was much more fun to play. The cleans had a little more hair on them, and the overdriven sound was more aggressive and rich. I followed this schematic.

dartanion has a layout which is basically an 18w lite IIB style with EF86 preamp tube.
I can't post it unless Darren says so though.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but that AC15 schematic is using a EZ81, I don't think it should be wired to the 5v ?

I didn't build from scratch, so my power supply was not directly based upon the schem - luckily

Thanks guys. Still haven't come to a decision. I was trying to stay away from the 5 or 6 position switch type setup but may end up going that way anyway. Hmmm.

Dartanion's layout is not exactly secret. It is posted up for general use on the 18watt.com download section and and many other places across the web.

I'm not sure I follow what you're trying to say here; care to restate in different terms?Gaz wrote:and you'd have to throw it away to get the same amount of gain as the Spitfire.JM2C.

Finished. Something's not right. It's sparkly clean to the top of the dial. It's loud. It's sounds really, really, good. But there's no break up anywhere. Start poking around tomorrow. I can't do anymore today.
