70's 100 Watt Hybid Started

Post by steve_p »

So I haven't been keeping up with TAG much over the summer. However, now that winter has set in, I think it is time to start another build.

I've been planning a 70's style build ever since hearing one of the Lance Keltner clips on youtube of his Bludo. I think this is what sealed the deal for me: http://youtu.be/CNuVfyQv2AA?t=47s

I did manage to get one of the last silver CE chassis when they made them, so that was a great start. After following Taylor's build thread awhile back, I decided to try and use as many NOS parts in the build as possible.

I have accumulated most of the Piher resistors that I need. Unfortunately, alot of them are only 1/2W, but I think that's better than not using NOS at all. I also have accumulated quite the assortment of NOS and aNOS 6ps caps to use. The only value that I haven't come across yet are the 0.1uF 600V. However, I have 20-30 brown mallory PVCs that I may substitute in their place.

I've gotten most of my mechanical components mounted in the chassis, but have not started wiring yet. Quick picture below of the chassis in the cabinet.

I will update this over the winter with progress. I look forward to comments, advice and criticism.

Thanks,
Steve

Steve,
I'm looking forward to the progress! That layout that Jborders did makes it easy to use the ce chassis, which is nice.

Are you going to add the FET and make it footswitchable?

The 1/2w pihers are fine, still very quiet. The 1W beyschlags can be a good alternative

My 2nd gen sounds killer.

Nice marketing plug....
The cab is actually from Super100 here on TAG. This is the 2nd one he has done for me and his work is excellent. I don't have one of yours Taylor to compare to (maybe I need to remedy that soon...).
I am going to do the footswitchable FET.

Ha yeah I thought that was good! Henry makes good cabs! I'm double checking a few things in my build now that I overlooked. I'm really looking forward to some pictures. I enjoyed Darins build too!

Got a little bit of wiring done over the last few days.
I have my relay supply and rectifier installed and have started the wiring for the relay power and switches.
I also went thru and checked made sure I had all the NOS resistors that I need for the preamp. Should have everything I need except for the 56k grid resistors, but found someone selling them so they are now on the way.
I am also waiting on some NOS 1meg audio pots for volume and the 2 masters, as well as a nos 500k linear for the treble pot.

I hope to machine the preamp PCB this week so next weekend I can start populating the board.

Happy new year everyone.

Hi All,
Haven't made too much progress, but I did get my preamp PCB machined this afternoon. Attached is a picture of the board in progress.

Hopefully tonight I will have some time to get some wiring done.

Steve

Where did you get those blue metal filament resistors and Pihers? e-bay?

The metal films were from mark huffman, however i believe he isn't selling at the moment.
The pihers were mostly from Ebay.

This is the same source I use. However, it looks like he is reorganizing his website and not selling anything at the moment.

Got a little bit more work done tonight.
Last weekend I wired up most of the rock jazz switches, PAB relay, and the pot ground buss.
This evening, I got the transformers mounted, power supply board in and power tubes wired up.
Next step will probably be populating the preamp board. I should be able to get on that this weekend.
I checked all my caps today with the scope for foil direction. Amazingly, all seem to be correctly marked.

I still need to order a power transformer, but I think that is it. I used a magnetic components tranny in my 124 build and it worked fine. I may go heyboer from mojo this time to match my output transformer. We shall see.

Looks good Steve! You are going to have a working amp in no time!

I used a 50w bassman PT from mojo for mine and it worked great. It didn't fit the CE chassis mounts, but I think that is because its drilled for a 100w PT.

PAB looks good, so you decided to use a different wiring scheme?
