My Yeti-clone build

Post by Mr Wright »

I decided to try my hand at a Marshall style build and after some looking around I decided to try one using Ceriatone's Yeti layout. I know I could get a better made amp for less money if I just purchased one from Nik at Ceriatone, but this project is about the personal satisfaction of sourcing the parts and building an amp myself. (I'll try my hand at circuit design on a future build).

Here are a couple shots of beginning to lay out the tubes and transformers on the awesome custom chassis that I got from Brian at Dirty Dawg Amps. The transformers and choke are Classic Tone by Magnetic Components.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I will include more pictures as I get time to actually work on the thing.

Believe me, we know what you're a-talkin'.

You going turrets, eyelets, or PTP?

The Yeti is one cool amp and been on my radar for a while.

Lot of wiring in the tone stack and all those switches makes this a hard project, just go slow and neatly wire it up.

Dare I ask what is the circuit and vibe of the Yeti, I can't say I've heard one.

Agreed, It is nice to sort your own iron and make component choices.

As far as the vibe of the amp, from what I understand it is based off of modded marshalls. There are several demos and rave reviews online.

I'm going to drill out my own turret board with a kit I got from tubedepot.

Yessir M Fowler, slow and steady for this one. For my last build I took to watching scifi movies while building to distract me and make me take my time. I'm going to start with Event Horizon on this one once I can get an evening to myself.

The Yeti is a not so bright version of the Chupacabra Marshall based amp with switches that allow different Marshall favors of the 60's and 80's modded plexi's.

The layout is on the Ceriatone webpage.

Any particular guidelines for spacing distance on EL34Bs? I couldn't find anything.

Not sure about EL34's...but...I used 3.125" center-to-center to allow for the use of KT-88s in the JCM-800/2204 home brew that I am currently working on.

I saw that value published in a data sheet that I dug up somewhere.

That might be a tad excessive for EL34's but couldn't hurt if you have the real estate to spare.

Cheers,
Dave O.

ooopps...just noticed that you are building a 4-banger. That probably won't work for you in this particular case.

Sorry for the confusion,

Here is Weber's 100w chassis spacing.

I'll include the 45w small chassis in case that better suits your chassis size but it's sized for larger KT66 tubes.

Thanks guys.

I'm working with 22x10x3 so I don't have a ton of real estate. I'm going to try 3" center to center and hope she works out.

Yeah I started with 27 x 6 x 2.5 chassis so it fits inside a large box Marshall type head cab.

Yours is going to have to have a really large box, close to Hiwatt size.

I'm building the head cab so it's no issue there.

I learned today that "Measure twice, cut once" only works when you have the correct tools.

First little hiccup of the build. My hole cutter is 1/16th of an inch too small for my octal sockets. I had to run to one of the bigbox guys in town to get a stepperbit or unibit or whatever folks call them in order to enlarge the holes. I also got final socket slightly off kilter, but that isn't a big deal.

Pictures shortly.
The girlfriend has a work trip next weekend so I'll get more time to work then.

And in slightly unrelated news I also got some roller stands so I can plane the maple and basswood lumber I have with less trouble. The wood will eventually be used in my first guitar builds. I also made progress with my head cab for my first build and I'll probably attempt my first ever tolex job this week. Pics of all this later as well.
