line out box with thru output

Post by El Chiguete »

Hello I would like to know if there is a line out box with thru output jack that I can use on a WDW setup. My idea for the setup is this:

I want to have a line out signal from the poweramp output of the Dry tone to run in the wet stereo effects processor so it captures the color of the poweramp too (of course I will have a clean poweramp running the wet stereo speakers) but I don't know if there is a box out there that has a THRU output jack that I can plug direct to the Dry speaker... I think that the ones I've seen need danother clean poweramp to run that speaker since it doesn't carry the strong signal coming from the output of the Dry poweramp (just a line level signal).

Is there something out there that does this or I need to build one?

I'd build one, it's two resistors.

And jacks. And a box. And a cool label.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

El Chiguete,
An old, original version H&K Red Box would be just about perfect, I'm not sure about their newer versions, lots more bells/whistles and delicate looking switches, etc. I'm currently keeping my eyes open for a reasonably priced original. For the time being, I'm using one of these for the time being and it works OK:

MF has them for $25.

There is also this model which may be even better for $35, although it does not have phase reverse, which you may need:

Even if your effects unit requires a 1/4" unbalanced signal, it is easy enough to make an XLR to 1/4" adapter by tying pin 3 & 1 of the XLR to ground (sleeve of the 1/4") and pin 2 to the +/hot tip. FWIW, I find this to be the absolutely best way to do time based effects, delay, echo etc. You will likely find it a challenge to get a nice balance for flange and chorus to blend with your dry. Here is my current rig that sounds amazing through a split Marshall 4x12 with Greenbacks:

1 - Guitar, with wah only, into a custom built 10 watt JCM 800/2203, I call it "The Ballzz"
2 - "The Ballzz" speaker out goes "through" the input output of the Zdirect to 2 speakers of the cab
3 - XLR output of the Zdirect goes into a Lexicon MX300, set to mono in/out
4 - Lexicon MX300 output goes into the effects return of a Marshall MG100HDFX solid state amp. The effects return bypasses all of the preamp, tone controls, etc, but provided the surprising benefit of being prior to the buit in digital effects of the amp. This is pretty nice, as the flanger, chorus and reverb are already well dialed in/suitable for guitar use. MG100HDFX drives the other 2 speakers of the cab.
5 - I put a mic on one of each pair of speakers through an XLR "Y" to go to the PA. This leaves me in total control of my effects balance, instead of leaving it up to the sound guy!
What brand/model effects processor are you planning to use?

So what would I need to consider before choosing one of these 3 options?

Interested in knowing more about that amp! PM me so this thread doesn't go out of its original intention.

I have an ADA MP-1 preamp and a Lexicon MPX-G2 for effects.

1- My idea is to run the MP-1 loop send to my tube poweramp (im using a slightly modded 5watt Epiphone Valve Jr that suprisingly sounds VERY good and loud!) for the dry sound
2- use this box to get line level signal from the speaker out of the Valve Jr back to the loop return of the MP-1
3- use the stereo outputs of the MP-1 in the stereo inputs of the MPX-G2
4- come out the stereo outputs of the MPX-G2 to a stereo solid state poweramp and then to the speakers

As you can see if I don't do something like this the wet side of things will just have the preamp tone in the signal and not the added color of the poweramp section and tubes.

I'll get back to you when I have time to go into details. For reference, What part of the universe are you located in. Maybe we could talk by phone?

Do these ART products allow me to plug the speaker cab directly after them or do I need to have another poweramp to powerup thespeaker cab?
