FYD amps?

Post by beasleybodyshop »

Anyone heard of this builder before? Pedal steel player I was listening to the other night was playing one with a pair of KT120s into a big silver dust cap 15 inch speaker. Sounded great.

Yup I've talked to him before and I like what he is building some very kool preamps and amps.

I also talked to this guy http://shawaudio.com/portfolio-item/shaw-bass-pre and like his high powered octal tube bass/steel amp.

I believe that is Dan or "Loosechange" on the forums. Used to hang out on the powerscaling forum all the time.

Hi Dan,
I noticed on your site that you built a "Standard". I just finished one a couple of months ago. What did you think of the "Body" controls and the Sag/Sustain control? I didn't include these two options in mine.

Hi Steve,
The sag control is cool to loosen up the amp. Gives more touch response. The body control just made the tone thin. I would have eliminated all those Pentode/Triode switches. I added a switch to turn off one set of power tubes.

I didn't do the triode/pentode switching either - never liked the sound of triode mode in a guitar amp.

I do like UL mode for a tonal variation. I didn't use any global negative feedback in the PA so it doesn't sound sterile in UL, just a little tighter. It's set up to hot switch between pentode/UL with relays. There is a barely audible click if you switch it while playing.
