Transformer Placement

Post by fusionbear »

Hello Gents. I am about to assemble a new build. This build will be Express influenced, but using all octal tubes. I am using a PT, Choke, and OT and was wondering what your thoughts are on transformer placement. The chassis I am using is a .090 aluminum blank chassis box 17.5 x 6.5 x 2.5 (JTM45/JMP50 sized).

My goal is to have a quiet build as possible and also efficient use of space so I have room to adjust the placement of sockets and turret strips.

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.... :D

place the PT where you think it should go and tape off/isolate the secondaries, then energize. instead of headphones i hooked up a DVM set to AC millivolts to the OT primary.. move both around until you read 0V or as close as you can get to 0V on the meter. or use headphones on the secondaries...

worked great for me, good luck! :D

Hi, Carl. This is a highly enlightening exercise. I've never tried Neal's suggestion to put a meter on the OT primary. The best system I've found is to wire the OT secondary to a small amp (I use a Smokey 1/4-watt amp) and listen to the induced hum as you move the two transformers around.

The hum will only drop to zero when the two transformers are 18 inches apart or more...but one rarely has the chassis width to do that! So you'll settle for finding the quietest placement of transformers adjacent to each other.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com
