Steel String Singer question

Post by rolloman »

First time poster here. Looks like a really great forum for Dumble amps info. I am curious what the selectable Filter circuit does in the SSS amp. Is it for noise purposes or for tone? Any info greatly appreciated.

Hey rolloman,

The circuit Filter is a basically altering the audio signal in changing the frequencies. The combination of different capacitors and resistors values allows to change the curve of the main frequencies response. The audio results varies from enhancing bass to cutting mids and/or adding trebles.

Here is a nice demo of the filters in the SSS

There is another nice demo of the filters in the dumbleland version here:

Cheers!

Fred.

Here you find the answer: https://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.p ... wer+driver
the low filter is basically a deep switch with different settings and the high filter is basically a bright switch with different values of the bright cap.
Nicely explained with schematic

Great link. Robert they talk of different SSS schematics on there. Do you know how I could get to those. The schematic I am using I don't think is the best. I am about 99% sure this amp will be my next build soon.

the schematics they refer to can all be found in the forum somewhere...
use the search, it will take some time

Moderators: would'nt it be nice to have a collection of the most relevant documentation e.g. re. SSS in one place? There is so much valuable info scattered all around the forum. It is very hard to find something when you need it quickly

Agreed, but as a mod my job isn't creating content, it's in moderating it. I.e. if someone created a page that summarized all this in a great single place, I'd pin in so it's easier found in the first page of dumble files.

I must add that hunting for these files helped me surface a lot of situations and advices of the community to resolve these issues.

So instead of painting by numbers, you learn the ins and outs of building an amp, all the little details and the variations that took place. It is an invaluable experience and is worth the search.

That's how I found most of Henry's Red Plate designs and words of wisdom. I learned a lot about the UP and HotelHog when trying to find those schematics and variations that exists.

The lesson here is there is no single dumble amp that's the same, they all share a lot of similarities, but the variations makes them unique.

Diversity is a treasure!

I personally would love one, but don't have time to go digging for the details. If someone has good detail on it somewhere and creates a thread for it, as said I'll sticky it like we did as norburybrook mentioned.

I agree, there should be a sticky for the SSS models. Not just for 002 and 004, but also member builds like mhartman, etc... Also, include layouts with the schematic where they exist.

SSS Collection of schematics, layouts and TAG member builds.

Here is the SSS 002. I don't know if it is the latest version. The first post says to refer to page 3. So here is page 3.

Here is another of SSS002.

Here is Martin Mannings solution to correct the step filters.

Here is Martin Mannings suggestion to build an improved bipolar power supply for the cathode follower driver.

Here is mhartman's build. If there is a more up to date version I don't know about it.

And here is more about mhartman's build.

Here is dreric's UL build that is similar to mhartman's build. He used Martin Mannings correction to the step filters.

Something I have noticed when searching for SSS 002 or SSS004. Neither works in the search because the search engine won't allow 3 characters. So this makes finding the schematics for these amps extremely frustrating. You gotta stumble across them. Using Google actually works better than using the forum search. I just found the below googling because using TAG was leading to frustration.

Here is another 002 build

Here is the 001 layout with tremolo.

Attached below are the Ceriatone SSS schematics and layout. The Ceriatone is said to be a clone of a Two Rock Sterling Signature, which is said to be a clone of a Dumble SSS 004.

Maybe you can start a new thread in the dumble files section with those links about Steel String Singer data, and I can sticky it. It might even be better if we were to re-upload the layouts/schematics to either a per amp thread (or just link to the files?) or one thread to rule them all.

Good start, but I'd rather sticky them with the first comments being either the layouts/schematics like ODS #124 etc.
