express or liverpool?

Post by goodtone77 »

It is hard to decide which to buid, i like the blues more than hard rock. I love the sound of a strat turned up. I have heard that the liverpool was voiced for a strat also does that mean that there is less gain?
need some help decided which to build

thanks

Hi Goodtone,
I had the same problem when trying to decide weather to build a pool or rocket.......... :)

I have heard the same thing,it was voiced w/ a strat in mind, but i always thought they had more gain ontap.

One thing you could try to do is, find a copy of the el-84 ampathon on dvd,This was a year or so ago........search for babaji postes @ the gear page( bill holter) I belive he can also be reached @www.vintagesound.com . for a copy.

Anyway.........Bill Demo's his Liverpool with a strat,tele,prs....through an old vox 4/12. Gives good example's of clean and overdrive settings and with different guitars.

BUT MAKE SURE YOU DON'T LISTEN OR WATCH THE CLIPS OF HIS 60' AC-30/4 OR YOU WILL ONLY BE MORE CONFUSED ON WHICH CIRCUT TO TRY!!!!!!!!

Thanks
Chris

I'm prototyping a 13W Liverpool right now, using a pair of ECL86's (triode-pentode pair, 12ax7/el84 in the same bottle). It can sound pretty "expressy" to my ears, but it all depends on how you set up the RC between the 2nd and 3rd stg. With .0022u/68k I was getting glassy piano cleans, but lost some of the responsiveness of the overdrive sounds. With .0047u/68k I was getting fantastic harmonic swells and etc (i.e. *great* response) but the cleans were slightly flabby. A little tweak goes a long way in this section of the circuit and I am going to experiment with it more before I decide how to set it up. I'm tweaking it for my humbucker-bridge/sc-neck guitar.

FWIW, I experimented with both 8k and 4k primary impedance on the OT, and I prefer 4k. Not quite as much power but it sounds more "together" to my ears. YMMV...

Doug, are you using standard 12AX7s for the other three triode preamp stages or are you changing the phase inverter or preamp setup? I am just curious. I have always watched your 'Wreck-flavored threads over at AX84 closely because you seem to be pretty good at putting the Wreck idea into unexpected packages. :)

Yes, I'm just using a pair of JJ's for the preamp stgs, and the triode sections of the ECL86's for the PI.

Thanks for the kudo's but I think you may have me mixed up with David Jones. He has come up with some "wrecky" ideas using weird tubes and etc.

Check out Geetarpicker's posted some videos of his real express with a strat ..sounds great. Not to throw a wrench in this decision but Hogy --of Komet fame-- and a few others lucky enough to ever play one say the Rocket --Kens version of an AC30--is the best sounding amp he's ever heard. Problem is its a pretty mysterious amp..no pics..no dead on accurate shematics/layouts that Im aware of..so for me that was out.

Didn't you build a Firefly version of a 'Wreck and play around with both self-split and a long-tailed pair? I was thinking of some threads from "Doug H" over on AX84 along those lines, threads which helped me select between phase inverters for some homebrew projects. I could have the wrong guy.
