Hi, I have an old 70's Traynor amp I made a couple simple mods to ( split acthodes with plexi values, Marshall tone stack and O.T )
I am realy diging the tone I get, but it is very STIff , is there a wau to loosen-up a tube amp's feel
This runs a pair of EL34s, SOlid state rectified and no choke.
ANy pointers appreciated

How loud do you play the amp, do you gig with it or only home play?
How many speakers do you play the amp thru?
Two things come to mind , you could get a attenuator to go between the amp and speaker, and this will let you dime the amp and get sag out of the power supply which will soften up the amp, but this comes along with distortion which you may not want.
You could cathode bias the output stage which will soften it up and use a switch to have normal or cathode biased, or you could do the cathode bias thing and get a attenuator.

value of coupling capacitors can be increased 2 times and see the result

That amp already uses .1 caps feeding the output stage!
You would not want to go any higher unless you want the low end to fart out as the amp is turned up.
In fact for smoother break up the OP might want to drop these two caps down to .022 uf!

output stage should be never touched, preamp need to be regulated, bigger caps, lazier sound,

You have some very very strange notions about amp when it comes to the OPs requirements of softening up his amp!
Have you ever heard of bias shift and blocking distortion, or better yet have you played a Amp that has this issue beginning at a certain volume level?

thanks to you all. Just to clarify, WHat I am looking for is a softer, spugier feel in general.
THe amp is very clean and starts breaking up only whaen cranked past 6 or 7 ( out of 10 )
but it remain quite stiff all along as if there never is any voltage drop even with loud bass heavy content.
ANother way to put it is it is to tight.
I noted the caps on the power supply are 80Uf + 80Uf wehre a Marshall 50 watt would use 50 + 50
Would droping those in value acheive my goeal ?

Reducing the filter caps would probably introduce more sag in the amp and would be the first place I would look to try something. If you have 2 50s drop them in and see

Agree - change 80+80 to 50+50.
SS rectification contributes to stiffness. Haven't been inside a Traynor, but it should have a power resistor in lieu of a choke. You could also increase value of that resistor in order to lower overall voltages, but make sure it is of sufficient power rating.
