My first post and first dumble build.
Well some of it is dumble. I realy like the clean tone of a Princeton reverb amp and I had build just the OD section of the ODS which I liked alot and used it in front of amps with good results. So I decided to build one with a Princeton preamp and phase inverter with a dumble OD. I used a deluxe OT for a little more volume an went with a SS rectifier. The power supply is based on a ODS and the power transformer was from an old Traynor 6V6 Bass Mate. The Princeton part sounds great the OD I find is a little muddy but not in a bad way. Do you think I should use 5uf on all the cathodes, is this the way he tamed the amp from being to muddy? I have face pates being made and would like to get the OD just a little better. I have also added a tone control on the OD based on a tweed prinston but the cap values have been changed to work with the OD better and the input trim pot and output trim pot are real pots mounted on the back.
Any advice would be nice to here and Marry X-mas.

I'm like you in that I don't always stick to EXACTLY Dumble's designs. It looks like a nice clean build. I'd like to hear it, can you post a recording?
Re: My first post and first dumble build.
Looks like a nice build I would be interested in hearing it as well!
What power tubes did you end up with? JJ or EH

Really nice clean build!
Love the colors!
So you are running the EL34's?
I'm using TAD 6L's currently but plan on trying the 34's as well as some 6V6's just to taste the various flavors of this amp.

Good job, welcome to the forum.
Re: My first post and first dumble build.
I think V1A 5uf, V1B 10uf, V2A 5uf, V2B 5uf is a nice setup to help with flub. while still retaining some of the fender character.
Re: My first post and first dumble build.
I've have 25uf-(5uf)-5uf-5uf-25uf and it seems better and it has close to the same frequency responce both clean and dirty. I changed to the (5uf) from 25uf. At first I had changed V1A as well but the tone was realy bad.JimiB wrote:I think V1A 5uf, V1B 10uf, V2A 5uf, V2B 5uf is a nice setup to help with flub. while still retaining some of the fender character.

Well here are some clean sound samples I made with my 1985 62 RI MIJ Tele custom. It starts with the neck position with the 6L6 then the EL34 then on to middle position 6L6/EL34 then bridge position 6L6/EL34. All the settings are the same and both sets of tubes were bias at 25mA per tube at 425V.

Re: My first post and first dumble build.
I like the clean, very Fender'y. The OD sounds a tad brittle to me though. If you like it don't change it, but I'm not a fan of silver mica caps on the treble and snubber positions. Ceramics will smooth it out and give a nicer texture to the tone (JMO)
Re: My first post and first dumble build.
Well I have made changes from some suggestions made by some of you kind folks. The cathode bypass caps are now 10uf, 5uf, 5uf, 1uf and 10uf.
The coupling caps are .02, .02, .02, .01, and .02. I changed the tone stack treble cap to a 220pf CD and the snubbers are 270pf CD because it is what I have. The tubes are JJ, GE NOS, and JJ 12AX7s and the power tubes are the EH EL34. I would still like to tame some of the bass any suggestions and here is a new sound sample.

Re: My first post and first dumble build.
Well it doesn't sound like a Dumble but it sounds good, much better than a stomp box for distortion.

Re: My first post and first dumble build.
I think the OD is a little harsh. It's waaay scooped in the mids and the bass is kinda not happening either. But that's what you get with a one knob tone stack. Have you looked at the tone control on the brown deluxe? It's got a .01 on top and may fill things up a bit.
The other thought is to give the thing the full three knob stack with trimmers inside and set everything a little fuller with the knob on the front being the treble control.
I dunno, not being critical here, it's a nice build. Just kinda thinking out loud.

Re: My first post and first dumble build.
I do not feel anyone is critical just trying to be helpful and it is thanks. I do have a .01 on the top but may be I will go back to the tone control now that I have changed everything else and see if that could help.
Where could I find some dry sound clips of a Dumble to get a good idea of the tone I'm looking for I think that may help also.
I guess I could give up and settle on the sound I have.
