I see that most amps are set up to use a separate 12vdc power supply to acvtivate the switching relay. Has anyone tried using 5vdc relays with a power supply taken from the heater winding?

This is my current plan too. I'd love to NOT be the first to have tried this.
Re: Switching voltage?
I used a 25A bridge rectifier from the filament supply for a friends amp. Works pretty well and draws insignificant current. Steve Ahola has the diagrams on blueguitar.org.

5 volt relay
Check out the Hoffman site and look under projects. There is a channel switching project that uses the windings. I was going to use one 4700 uf at 16 v and a voltage regulater with bridge rectifier.
Re: Switching voltage?
The Weber board is really simple. It uses a 28V 5A relay. You can't ground it at all.
