Finally posted a sound clip. I used a Lopo open-back wide single-12" cab with a Celestion Legend 1218. This speaker sounded the most balanced to me based on the Celestion web-site sound clips. I know it is a deviation from the mainstream thinking in the posts here, but let me know what you think. You can see the amp settings in the attached photos. The amp was probably only running at about 10W. I tried all the preamp tubes: JJ, Mullard, Tung-Sol, and EH. I liked the Tung-Sols and the EHs the best. This clip is with the EHs. The power tubes are Winged-C 6L6s. I close miked the cab with a SM57 direct into an M-Audio Fast-Track. I used their medium-room reverb to liven it up. The guitar is a USA Hamer Studio with SD PUPs. Add some sloppy playing and you get the attached sound clip....I may have gotten warmed up a little later on in the clip.
Very nice sound and cool playing also The attack of some notes seems like there would be a compression pedal in there. I wonder what makes that so ? What size strings do You use ?

I don't know how you guys get such a good sound close micing. My attempts sound horrible. Yours sounds much less boxy than my attempts. Nice tone, with some good fizz on top!

Me too. I have the added issue that the room I work in sounds terrible. This clip sounds great, nice smooth open sound, excellent playing.
Agree all around here. Nice stuff. Just a touch of verb. In the mix or in the amp?

The recording was done very quickly and simply - in less than an hour after I downloaded the backing track from dogear's link. The knobs on the amp were set exactly as shown in the photo. I took the photo after I removed the mike stand and moved the amp and cab out of the doorway. I put the amp in the small bathroom off my home office (the doorway leads there) facing towards the wall and left the door open while recording. It has a tile floor. This may be too much detail.
The signal from the SM57 went directly to the M-Audio Fast-Track. The recording was made using M-Audio's Session software that comes with the $100 Fast-Track (from Best Buy). I used Session's medium-room reverb for the reverb. I have not re-wired the effects loop in the amp yet so I did not try adding reverb that way or pedals in the guitar input signal chain. Any compression you here has to be from the amp or what ever is inherent in the Session/M-Audio system. There are no other effects besides the slight reverb. Strings on the guitar are the typical 009-042 combination. Nothing fancy. Sorry I can't tell you tube voltages, gain pot setting or any of that right now. I did some documentation, but I need to go back and re-measure some parameters.
I too was surpised by the excellent tone I got. Did I nail the Dumble tone though? I was concerned by my choice of speaker.
