after building a clone of a Trainwreck Express i realized that the circuit had a marshall power section and a fender preamp. so for shits and giggles i wired it into one of my amp builds!
There is a horn-like quality I really dig, and to me it sounds very very spongy and chewy. I wish I could have the same overall tightness with the clone I have. Sounds like this combination is very adequate for crunchy chord work! Mean Street double(triple?)-stops at 36s: wohaaa, chunky!
Was this dimed??? The C note you played first did not develop as an infinite feedback on the fundamental note itself. The sustain was certainly there in large amounts and I heard the gradual clean-up, bare metal string right-in-your-face thing, but it sounds to me like the compression (specifically the release part) is more marshall than wreck.
Or...maybe just fooling myself into believing that the choke versus resistor thing would make all that difference... ... ...
Anyway, the articulation is just in a different class compared to what I get here (at least on anything chord-like), and it seems the added clarity you get is somewhat a trade-off for sustain... but that could also be in the ear of the beholder as well. Sigh.
Mark..I'm a little confused here. You mention Marshall, Fender and Trainwreck in the same sentence. Are you saying the preamp is a Fender or a Trainwreck cause I didn't think they are the same, least not the ones I've seen. I know you have the amp in a Marshall chassis
Stew
i was just thinking about this last night thinking that the express is close to a fender preamp. of course with an added gain stage. maybe I'm wrong.
the amp yer looking at is a plexi spec amp with the first three tubes of an express inside it.
On the other hand one could possibly argue that the Marshall preamp section you were replacing (with this Fender one) is really a Fender preamp section. . . and that the Marshall power amp section was really a Fender power section as well. Just slight slight changes. So you replaced an older, slightly modded tweed bassman-esque Fender preamp section (which we affectionately know as Marshall) with a slightly modded version of the blackface vibrato channel preamp section (affectionately known as the Express). . . It's all Fender with just a few tweaks... One could argue, just for shits and giggles though, eh? Loads and loads of gain at hand. Sounds awesome (as always) Rockstah.
