So, who else has a KF modded amp?

Post by 57special »

I've got a tweed Deluxe and a BFDR (AKA Hot Rod Deluxe) that were modded by KF in the mid/late 80's. I know of at least one Marshall 20 watt head that he tweaked, and a Komet or two. Anyone else?

Care to elaborate on those mods? I've got a deluxe that I was gonna start tweeking with as soon as I get my express all buttoned up.

Unfortunately i'm not very technical with amps. The tweed Dleuxe is a 53 that has been rebuilt so that it has only two inputs, one normal, and one more Marshally, and has a V,T,M, B (also on/off) arrangement. I think at least one of the trannies, if not both has been changed.
The BFDR is a 65 and has had the trem taken out. These controls were changed to a Global presence and Mid. The reverb channel is like the best DR you've ever heard, and the Normal channel is much more linear and intense. Lotta gain. Apparently he did quite a few of these in the mid 80's. I have the original bill from KF and the mod is called "Hot Rod Deluxe". I believe it dates to 87. Makes me wonder if Fender heard of these amps/mods and took the idea for their own.

The BFDR has lots of gain, as well as classic Fender cleans. The other one has a stronger, clearer sound with less gain, though it certainly is ballsy for an amp that is about as big and heavy as some lady's purses. It has a bit more headroom than the BFDR.

take a look at the AB763? Deluxe reverb schematic. Then remove the normal channel, the reverb and the vibrato leaving only the vibrato channel and the power amp. Then take a look at the express schematic. See any similarities (pre-amp part)?

The guy owns a Bassman (blackface), which Ken converted to a Wreck.
Basically the Express circuit, removed one tube, EL-34's. Sounds quite good.
Ken penciled in the values on the tag board and signed it.
Proud holder of US Patent # 7336165.
