Good options for the RG59/Coax cable/wire...

Post by Paul-in-KC »

All,

I got a great tip from forum member "Matt J" on some thin flexible coax (RG188-double shielded). Unfortunately after ordering, I find that they are not going to have it in stock until September. Also, Pasternack (the vendor) seems to be the only one carrying this (at least from my Google searches thus far).

Can someone post a few of their favorite picks for the coax to use in D-style builds?

Seems like thin and flexible would be best.

Thanks!

See if you can find what you want here... it looks like you have to buy at least 10 or 25 feet but it's not too expensive.

I'm vewwy happy with this Mogami 2330 shielded coax. Outside diameter is 3mm.

You can order here, $0.30/ft, free shipping, no minimum order:

Beat that!

I'll have to order some of that - because it's almost free to have a look.

Thanks!

BTW - I found some "military grade" (so they say) RG-174 at Antique Electronic Supply for $0.67 per foot. So, ordered ten feet of that. Outside diameter is 0.105"

Thanks for that update!

Ordered some of the RG316 for comparison.

BTW - any opinion on the RG174?

So far I have received the RG174 and the Mogami 2330. Both of those seem quite nice.

The Mogami is more flexible/supple. I believe for two reasons. The outside sheath seems to be softer and the shield isn't braided. It's just fine strands of copper twisted around the core. But seems like the shielding property will hold up until the outer sheath is removed. At which point it's easier to prepare for soldering than a shield that is braided. No surprise that the Mogami cable would be nice - as they have a pretty good reputation in the pro audio cable arena (at least that's my impression). At $0.30 per foot and free shipping - I'd say it's a steal. Nice suggestion xtian!

I have a couple of other options coming - so will wait to see the rest and use whatever I like the best. But I think either of the first two would be fine.

Received some Beldon RG316 (84316) today from ShowMeCables.

Looks cool. Clear sheath with braided shield. Similar to the RG174 that I got - except the clear sheath seems to be a bit stiffer.

I had enough of using the RG59/U as well. Too large and stiff and the core breaks too easily.

Struggling to find PTFE (teflon) Shielded in Europe. Has anyone had better luck?

Thanks Erwin, I had not tried them. I could not find on their online stock but I sent them an email.

Also got some RG316 in the meantime.

That looks pretty good - and pretty good price too.

Thanks for adding that to the pile!
