Monkeymatic barncaster
The front of my rental home was sagging. Turned out the foundation was rotten, and the whole front had to be rebuilt. I salvaged some beefy pine from the interior and had my local luthier CNC it into a couple Tele bodies. Barncaster style!
Next I need to fill and seal, but I want it to look natural. I plan to finish with Birchwood Gun Oil, as in middle photo, above. What should I fill the grain and voids with?

Now I'm disinclined to fill. Leaning toward Minwax Wipe-On Poly Gloss, as decribed in green section on this page: https://www.cavalierpickups.com/frettech/index.html

Re: Monkeymatic barncaster
Nice! Must be pretty lightweight.Do you know what species of pine it is?
Re: Monkeymatic barncaster
Could you do a fumed-oak thing with it, since you're going with a barn theme? I guess that requires some pretty gnarly high-test ammonia, though.
Re: Monkeymatic barncaster
Pine lacks the pores that require filler. No worries. Not needed. That ought to look and sound great however you do it. Is that an arm cut I see? Highly recommended.
Just plug it in, man.
Re: Monkeymatic barncaster
I like solvent based fillers like famowood or plastic oak.
Re: Monkeymatic barncaster
The finish test board looks kind of blotchy.
Pine can be hard to get a stain to take evenly. There are prestain products that help get an even application of stain. Some work better than others.

I would lean towards poly over an oil finish on softwood. I would recommend lacquer but that's probably not an option for you.xtian wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2023 4:02 am Now I'm disinclined to fill. Finished, played a couple hours yesterday, loving it. Needs a new nut and very minor fret level. 7.2 pounds. Really happy.
