Tags amp sounded better biased cold. When Shad was there, he raised the bias, but after playing for a few hours, Tag figured he liked the colder bias more. and TKT.Structo wrote:So these and a lot of other ODS amps are really running the bias cold aren't they?
That's barely above 50% on Tags amp, no?
Hmmm, I may have to get my screwdriver out....
On one hand, that's very dull...on the other, sort of interesting because it could have been designed for a range of guitar pickups.ampdork wrote:I believe it was made for a studio owner.Does anyone know who was the original owner of #183? If not a household name, what kind of guitar did (s)he play?

Hmmm, I may have to get my screwdriver out....Its still set at the hotter bias, and Brad should have it lowered. More harmonics, more note bloom, and a much softer feel. By the way....Fords or Tags amp? No one loves Blue line Ford more than I, and Tags amp beats that hands down. New Ford tones? (Post Blue moon) Who cares...IMO they suck.
Yep not a very wicked cool story but I too suspect maybe he voiced it to cover more common ground not knowing what or whom might play it.On one hand, that's very dull...on the other, sort of interesting because it could have been designed for a range of guitar pickups.
Do we have an actual reading for the bias that made Tag's amp sound so fine?Mr Dumble wrote:

Hes not sure why. He says its kind of cool though. He says you should try it for yourself and see.dogears wrote:Tag, why are you referring to yourself in 3rd person?
I guess i should just read the posts before asking questions already answered.ampdork wrote:TKT amp:
Bias was set to 30.3mA @ 465.5 DC plate voltage
Here you wrote:In fact, RFs amp is unplayable without the loop and cables.
Is this because you are talking of two different RF amps, one that you did not like without a Dumblelator and special cables (Dumblelator thread) and one that you did like even without a Dumblelator in the loop (this thread)?dogears wrote:I have played both Robben's amp and Tag's amp. Robben's amp has far more bloom. Bloomiest amp I ever played in fact. It is also not overly bright or crisp. I prefer RFs by a margin.

Hi Tony,
AFAIK RF used different ODS with different series numbers over the years. And AFAIK he sometimes even used the ODS amps of other musicians for his recordings.
@all:
Because of this it would be really interesting what amp you refer here to as beeing the "the RF amp" (On which track of which record?)? About wich amp you are you all talking about as "the RF amp"?

Or do you like both amps - the one of Robben Ford (# unknown up to now) and #183 only with a Dumblelator in its loop and you don't like both of them without the Dumblelator?
@Mac Daddy,
Hi Mac Daddy,
may I ask, how all the clips of #183 you've posted here and in the "reference thread" have been recorded? With or without a Dumblelator and special cables in the loop to "tame the highs"? And thru what kind of cabinet / speakers?
All the best,
Max
