Steel String Singer#002 build from Scratch

Post by Hendrixianer »

Hi Folks :D
I´m from Germany, and build the #002 SSS from Scratch, taking R.Colgan´s Layout and a few Schematics from Net.

I drilled a Blanko Marshall Style Chassis, only 10mm smaller by my self,go with selfmade Eyelet Boards and laser engraved Faceplates.
Some Mod´s I integrated: Standby Switch direct after Rectifier, but than another Rectifier Diode in Series after the Switch, and Stby Switch referenced to gnd via 1MΩ,a parallel 47K Resistor, let some current flow in Standby Mode, for safer Operating.
Also i integrated a Switch-on Current Limiter with NTC and Relay, witch bridge the NTC with a Delay of 5 sec´s between Power-Sw. and PT.
furthermore,i go with mannings Bipolar Bias Supply and Filter Mod.

After a few Prob´s. the Amp is now full working and Great Sounding, only the Headshell i have still to build. Here is the Buildprocess, in a German Forum: https://www.musikding.rocks/forum/index ... ng-singer/ ,you can there also take a look on my other Builds, like a Dumble ODS,Marshall JTM45,Hiwatt Dr103,Orange OR120 as 50W Version,6G15 standalone Reverb,etc...
best regards from Germany,
Micha

Great build Micha! You put a lot of effort in to make this from scratch.
Nice to see some little twist compared to the original, the true marks of someone who knows what he's doing.
Congrats!

Another Mod:
Heater Elevation to +53VDC using a Voltage Divider 330K:68K after Rectifier, now i´have only a Voltage potential difference on cathode followers (Heater to Cathode)V2,V3 about 170V instead of 220Vbefore elevating it !
Vfk limiting Value of a 7025/12ax7 is 180V for Tubes from Current Production.

It seems,Nobody take care of it,in all the Steel String Singer clones

No,its the Inductor,Mesa and two Rock uses....
But, I think,it´s more Snakeoil in the SSS,and has no Effekt to the Sound.I will try one Day,test it switchable for A/B Compare......

Thanks, I snagged one of the triad inductors from another member here a while back for whenever I get around to this build. I'm in the camp that you may as well build it as close to the original just in case. Though it seems possible HAD was maybe just having a laugh by including some of these things like the coiled wire and inductors.

Would love to hear clips once you are satisfied with it.

Yes,thats my Intention,and the Induktor,is so cheap,that i give it a try  ,Hovever,not testet until yet,if it makes a difference without it,but i don´t think so  .
Yes,if i had a little more Time and a better recording solution as my damned Smartfon,i will upload some Soundfiles, but i was a Dinosaur, when it comes to recordings, this is not my World, and My Soldering is much better as my Guitar Playing too
