Anyone prefer Alnico speakers for D-Style amps?

Post by doveman »

Anyone like alnico speakers for these amps ... never tried one myself?
  • Celestion Gold
  • Scumnico
  • ASW Elegante
  • Jensen Jet Blackbird
  • Others
I've always liked the EVM12L ceramic best ... have some other ceramics. But wondering if the alnico would work well by itself or in a combo with a G1265 in a new 2x12.

I tried a Jensen P12N and it was Yuck Yuck relationship.

I have a Jet in storage but have never tested it as of this point in time.

I think there are quite a few that like the Gold.

They are way over my speaker budget.

I like the two EVM's I bought.

Tried a Tone Tubby, Alnico Hempcone in a 1x12 openback cab, and it was overly bright, harsh and it was definitely no go.

I have a 2x10" with a couple of weber 10a125, which are real nice with my #124 clone

weber alnico's right here. one a jensen clone, the other a custom (sortof a mix between a celestion gold and g12-65) and a 10'' EVM clone. All alnico all sound amazing
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them

FWIW: I run my 70s ODS into a 2x12 cab loaded with Alnico Tone Tubbies, and the tone is anything but harsh.I like this better than anything else I have used in the past, including Altecs, EVs, Celestions, Eminence, Jensens....
These speakers seem to work better with the brighter 70s style overdrive.
However, I have found that the choice of speakers is a very subjective matter, and no speaker can do it all.Of course, the cabinet is as important as the driver, but I guess we all know that.

Have fun, Marcos

I prefer Celestion Gold over g12-65 for my Bluesmaster amp but on the other hand, I prefer g12-65 for my Skyline nonHRM

Scumnico sounds great with my Redplate (non-HRM). Not harsh at all, but lively.

I'm using an alnico ev SRO in my Welagen ODS 50 combo and I love it. I also supplement it with an ev 12S in a crate cabinet. Phil

Yes Jensen Blackbird. Nice and smooth with some chime.

Mixed with a Lorantz (Australian made) from an ex Plessey Rola speaker designer. Similar to a Celestion 25watt but rated at 75watts ceramic.
Nice mids in this speaker.

Some of the Brown note guys are using the jensens too.

Thanks for the input ... giving a Scumback ceramic a try in that 2x12 I've been working on. We'll see how it works ... too many cabs. I definitely have some good choices ... they all sound pretty good. :D

IMHO, the blackbird works well in a compact combo. Keeps it from sounding small and boxy. The gold (as mcinku stated) sounds really good with the bluesmaster circuit for cleans and crunch, but gets a bit fizzy with PAB engaged. I also tried an alnico Fane, but didn't have time to break it in. (On loan from Darrin.) Overall, my favorites have been the EVM12L and the Red White & Blues. I'm still trying to like the G1265 but it does something to the top end that doesn't sit right with me.

My original thought was a 2x12 EVM12L and drop my G1265 in the 1x12. Turns out ... I missed the 1x12 EVM ... the 2x12 EVM12L was real heavy (my bad back reminded me) ... and the G1265 always sounded "not right" as a 1x12 except at real low volumes. It was real flabby in the low end at higher volumes. I always thought the G1265 type might work as a 2x12 ... so I have a simlar Scumback on the way.

But the EVM is probably still king ... whole room full of cabs and will probably still be carrying around that 1x12 EVM.

I got an old 70S coffee can EV 12 SRO speaker and stuck it in my open back 2x12 along with my
EVM12L, at first I was disheartened as the mids were not as prominent but there was a ton of low end that was very clear and articulate. I always thought my EVM12L had lots of low but nothing compared to the SRO , the sro was very clear sounding compared to EVM12L but much darker sounding so I decided to tweak the amp to suit the SRO first pulled the bright switch on pre amp gain this helped greatly jammed with it for an hour TWEAKED THE MIDS TO 7or so and now I love this speaker much more than the EVM12L
it is a very clean sounding speaker if that makes any sense, and OD is so smooth as butter
also the cleans are brilliant. never thought I would find a speaker I liked as much as evm12l if you can get one of these I would recommend it highly, tho the alnico magnet weighs 18lbs overall much the same as EVM12L tho after playing the SRO I dont want to connect the EVM 12L yet,
it amazes me how much a difference the speaker makes to an amp . I would recommend this speaker to anyone who has an amp that is on the bright or harsh side thanks Derek

The more I play my setup the more I like it too! For some reason the evm 12S in the small crate cabinet seems to compliment the alnico SRO in the combo quite nicely. Phil
