Hi,
I’ve got a fender bassman OT (022871) that is not working correctly, distortion appear as soon as the volume is between 2 and 3…
I was thinking of using it in a #40 aka 70's Layout dumb.. amp
The price for a complete rewound is… Expensive!
My question is :
Do you think it is worth it?
Are old irons that good?
(actually, a few constructors answered me that their repro product will sound better than the real rewound one…)
Thanks for your help !

No one actually remembers what a 40+ year old amp sounded like when it was new. It isn't worth the price of a rewind. Buy the repro.
Sell the bad one on eBay. Some collector or someone who rolls his own will take it off your hands and reduce the price of that repro you buy.
If you think the amp might have collector's value, then just keep the old one with the amp for when you sell it.

Thanks for your answer !
I was thinking that the old irons, beside the winding, will add somethings to the sound, just as the magnet on old guit' pickup...
Sad news, now I'll need to sell this one, and to buy a new one !
Thank you by the way !

If you can wait you should be able to find a replacement old one on ebay. Also I recall a NOS tube guy who takes full page ads in Vintage Guitar magazine who also sells transformers out of old Fender amps.
