Re: What speakers does Dumble use?
and don't forget break in time for the speaker before you decide it's not right for you. I'm sure the majority of us have gone through that at some time. Ya trade the speaker with someone or sell it off cheap to get a different one and then you hear that guy you traded or sold the speaker to at a gig and the sound coming from his amp is awesome. "Hey man, nice sound"......."Thanks man. That speaker you sold worked out great for my tone".......LOL You get the idea.

Excellent post. I've bought a good number of Emi speakers on ebay that weren't broken in. They sound so different after break-in.Drumslinger wrote:and don't forget break in time for the speaker before you decide it's not right for you. Here´s my 2 cents:
Over the last 30 years I bought, sold and tried lots of speakers,
and like many here have experienced that all speakers need some
time to break in.The results are not predictable, some get mellower,
others get brighter and open up.Some change quite drastically, while with others I found very little change/improvement.
I´ve come to the following conclusions:
1.Don´t judge any speaker that has been installed right out of the box,
give it at least several weeks to break in.
2.No two drivers, even of the same model, sound exaxtly the same.
3.The cab is at least as important as the driver.
These experiments took a lot of time, patience and money,
I´d be glad to hear of somebody else´s experience.

Re: What speakers does Dumble use?
marcos, you don't need to wait for a such a long time (weeks)
take a filament transformer and attach it to the speaker letting it break in for 24/48h

I've had this discussion with Anthony @ Eminence and yes Speaker break in is a very real Phenomenon.. This is especially true when dealing with the inconsistency’s associated with the use of paper cones (a porous material w/inconsistent qualities) that flexes over time...
In a nutshell
Playing music causes the cones to flex,(not just the spider)
Different frequencies and loudness cause different parts of the cone to flex when natural resonances are generated
As the materials flex they become softer (for lack of a better word) and less resonate.
They also develop preferred “flex lines” like wrinkles on your skin, so that when they do flex, the appearance of distortion is less pronounced (at certain frequency's)
This reduces the height of resonant peaks in the frequency response.
Thus a “smoother” sound as they break in..
Adhesives used in the manufacturing of the cone material also soften further dampening the resonant peaks (Although this takes a bit longer) but ever changing over the life of the speaker..Now factor in moisture..
Due to the inconsistent qualities of Paper cones this varies speaker to speaker and can even vary from 2 identical speakers purchased the same day (since we don’t really know where the cone was cut off the same or different roll).. Since in most cases speakers in guitar cabs are placed side by side the tonal variances are virtually indistinguishable..(for those who have been in the studio mic you have your favorite speaker)
FWIW.. an AC applied helps with spider flex (softer bass response) it doesn't really help in the way of flex lines..BTW proper break in voltage on a spider using 8 ohm 60w speaker..12.64911
They have a calculator for everything.
Footnote..Much of the above generally applies to those who play at fairly loud or gig volumes

Re: What speakers does Dumble use?
This has been under debate since tube amps have been around.
Most will agree that a one step mismatch is not harmful.
Like an 4 ohm amp into a 8 ohm speaker load.
Output transformers have two separate windings around an iron core.
There is the primary side (tube) and the secondary side (speaker).
They are not connected to each other physically.
But through inductive coupling they can step up or step down the electrical properties.
An output transformer takes the high voltage from the power tubes an transforms it to a lower voltage that the speaker can use.
Most agree that tube amps can handle a one step mismatch either way, but ideally for efficiency, they should be matched.

Re: What speakers does Dumble use?
The speaker impedance reflects back to the primary, which in turn give the load the output tubes will see, you may loose some power but there is some flexibility (and debate) as to which gives the preferred sound. Just don't under-load your output tubes.

Re: What speakers does Dumble use?
Thank you for the detailed explanation, Tony.
It definetely confirms what I have found out by experimenting.
I must also add that none of this matters as much as room acoustics,
the one big factor that is almost impossible to control when you´re gigging.

Re: What speakers does Dumble use?
HAD and I went through his speaker choices about 6-7 years ago. His preferred speakers (based on the client's tone needs with his amps) were (no particular order)
EVM 12L
G12-65
G12-80
G12K-100
There may have been others but these were the most popular ones he used/recommended for players that use his amps.
He also worked on Marshalls and Fenders, and depending on the client's tone needs those included G12M/G12H30's (pre rola 66-73). With the Fenders it was all over the map, forgot what those preferred speakers were.
