100 watt, 90s circuit EL34 HRM- Demo

Post by Billion81 »

Hey Folks-

I posted this over on TGP. I apologize in advance to only having so much information as I am not a builder but I read alot on these boards and have learned much about D and Wreck circuits. I would love to try a build but I fear I would simply not have the patience or skill to see even 5E3 circuit to completion.

A friend built this amp. As the title states- it's a 90s circuit HRM using Marshall Trannies- Please let me get permission to post the gut shots as I do have them.

I have a Tube Buffered effects loop but in this clip I just ran the Les Paul straight in to (first) the normal and then in FET so the signal is completely dry and with no FX loop or anything.

The speakers are Eminence Delta Pro 12As in a THD Cab.

I am amazed at the subtle yet significant differences in tone this amp has vs. the same set up with Music Man Iron.

This was recorded with a Sony PCM 10 recorder in our Master Bedroom as it is quite deep and has really high ceilings. That and my wife and kids were out of town so it looked like ground control in there.

OK- here it is>>

Sweet sounding amp!

In a way I prefer these types of recording to polished tracks with backing tracks. Makes it raw and honest and what the amp sounds like in reality.

Sounds very nice! Harmonically rich while staying smooth at the same time! That was one of the things I loved about 183. Enjoy that amp!

Thanks Tag- Is/Was 183 a 90s layout? I really, really dig this rig but am also on the list for a 90s El34 HRM amp with Jelle which I am really looking forward to.

I am sold on the major impact of OT/PT on these amps as it relates to tone both clean and OD. When I get Jelle's rig it will be very cool to A/B as I think we are going to use MM Iron for that one.

I have a Fuchs Modded MM HD-130 that has EL34s in it but obviously has those giant MM trannies and the tone is different. Awesome- but different.

so-

I now have a Fuchs modded HD130 that has 6l6 and it is also different. Explaining that to my wife is tough but alas the differences are there.

I guess I need to get a Video camera though as there are a few chuckleheads over @ TGP that accused me of not actually doing the playing.

I got this PM "Can you do a video of your demos- I hear you talking while the notes are still ringing out so it's kind of hard to believe you are doing the playing on your clips." :?

It's one of mine, here's a gut shot. nothing special, basic HRM architecture with a few alternate values that work for me.

Thanks- It's a giggler..

The single coils are a whole 'nother set of fun. The El34s compress just ever so slightly so for the clean, country style guitar it is really a cool vibe.
