Three Channel Switching?

Post by rsalinger »

Hi There,

Does anyone have a good layout/schematic for a quiet, click-free, foot-switchable 3-channel switcher/relay? …or a link to one?

Thanks,
Rob

hi,
explain what it is you are trying to do? are you switching between three amps? or three different effects chains? It almost sounds like you need a small mixer with aux sends! If it was a studio I would just mute what I don't need.

Hi there, thanks for the response.

I'm looking for a very basic foot-switchable relay (12v) layout that I could put on a turret board to switch between the 3 channels on my current build... which I am struggling through...

Should've gotten a kit, instead. :(

so you want to switch between 3 different preamps in one chassis?

Yes, a three channel amp could be compared to three different preamps in one chassis. There usually are some stages that are common to two or three channels though.

It's quite a challenge to wire such a circuit on a turret board as it'll most probably contain some IC's... The schem to look at is X88R for example.

The only way I was able to do this was to use the Peavey Rockmaster type arrangement. On this preamp you have 2 buttons, button one switches between clean and dirty, button 2, when dirt is turned on switches between the 2 dirt channels.

If that would work for you look up the schematic for the Rockmaster preamp.

Exactly!

None of the stages are common/shared... Ef86 channel. Vox Voiced 12ax7 channel and GTO-type lead channel. Thanks for the Soldano Suggestion... I'll look into that. I've been studying a CAE preamp schematic, over the last few days. Is the relay system similiar?

It's interesting that you mention Peavey. The Cabinet and Chassis that I'm using for this build came into this world as a Peavey Classic 30. Lots of fabrication, as you can imagine.

I have a 3-channel amp that uses 2 relays. One relay switches between 2 of the channels. The other relay switches between the output of the other relay and the 3rd channel. You have one footswitch that "always wins" when it is on, regardless of the other switches.
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

If you don't have components in common then you can use two relays. One switches between channel 1 and channels 2/3. The other switches the channel 2/3 input to the first relay between channels 2 and 3.

Take a look at the Marshall Silver Jubilee (2550/2555) for a pretty simple relay schematic that you can easily adapt to two relays and a 1/4" footswitch jack. You can have the sleeve of the stereo jack common to both relays and then use the tip for one and the ring for the other.

Only thing you need to watch for if you're going to use this method is to use an insulated jack or you'll short out your relay rectifier since the heater centre-tap will be at a different potential to the DC 0V line and is already tied to the chassis.

If the channels are 1) clean, 2) crunch and 3) lead then on a regular two-button footswitch the first button will switch between clean and dirt, and the second between crunch or lead. While you're in clean mode you can still change the second button between crunch and lead (and the LED will indicate this) ready for when you want to come out of clean mode.
