Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
Hi,
This week a friend of mine is gonne bring over his d-clone.
Non-hrm skyline(sorry I'm not into the new namings).
The plan is I'm gonna mod it to a Bluesmaster pre-amp with a non-hrm overdrive section and standard PI/power amp with 6L6.
Obviously it will take some time to get things right, but I like the experiment very much.
Is there anyone who invented the wheel with this? I appreciate if someone could share their experience with this particular built.

Re: Bluesmater pre with non-hrm overdrive
I've tried that, and I like it quite a bit more that the straight-up BM circuit.. though I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble (if you already have a non-hrm skyline amp). I prefer the mid-range boost of the normal PAB circuit, and that kinda works with the BM pre by just lifting the treble pot/bass pot junction instead of the tail of the entire stack, however due to the low-value slope resistor you'll find that the mid and bass controls still work when you do this. Anyway, I suggest that you experiment with it, and let us know what works out best for you!erwin_ve wrote:Hi,

Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
I did something similar on one amp (Chris actually played it). Chris it was that snakeskin amp. At that time, the amp had 5881's installed.
It was a Bluesmaster front end into a non-HRM OD section with 150K/100K plates. It actually sounded quite nice.
No loop on V1B btw. Standard BM boost, with gain reduction to 6db.

Chris and Gary;
Thanks for your input.
Od plates 150k/100k; did you use 5uF cathode cap?
Gain reduction PAB 6dB: instead of the 22M from mid cap you use somewhere between 68-100K?

IIRC, Mark found 72K gave him 6dB boost.erwin_ve wrote:

Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
Gary's amp was killer. I almost went home with it. Thought there was some other secret sauce inside though. Gary? Was the PI normal, or AB(y)normal?glasman wrote:I did something similar on one amp (Chris actually played it). Chris it was that snakeskin amp. At that time, the amp had 5881's installed.

Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
First tests sound promising.
Slope 68k, 47k was too bassy.
Mid pot 25k. 0.02uF from V1B.
I left the Nonhrm side with high plates, 330pF snubbers, 180K resistor coming from v2B coupling cap. Standard PI.
Dumblelator in the loop.
A little recording is added.

Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
Wow, that sounds pretty good. I can't wait to finally get started on my BM. Hopefully it'll happen over Christmas break. I may have to try a non HRM overdrive on mine also.
Re: Bluesmaster pre with non-hrm overdrive
@gilgalad; thnx!
I'm really loving this amp! Bluesmaster clean has a slightly more compressed feel (compared to Skyline EQ with 150k slope). The tonestack is more responsive than Skyliner for my taste.
And last but not least; the non-hrm overdrive feels and plays like other Non-hrm amps I have. Tone is little different of course.
Really best of both worlds.
This amp has to go back to it's owner so I'm planning to do the same conversion on my HRM amp.
For use with or without a dumblelator there is a push-pull 68pF cap on the master.
PAB is standard Bluesmaster with a 75k from mid pot to ground.
If anyone is interested I can make a schematic.

That sounds very nice indeed.
Was the bright cap engaged here on either clean or OD? If sounded to me like it was on the clean?

Thnx Exocet; bright cap on master was engaged on both clean and OD. There was a dumblelator in the loop.exocet wrote:That sounds very nice indeed.
