2 ch plexi w/EVH & ACDC Tone

Post by dailey »

Decided it was time to convert my express clone into something I could use at gigs. This amp really works well for what I play & I have control over the volume without any tone or sustain lose. I do play loud but nothing like an Express cranked up. With a Les Paul & one 2x12 cab w/ g12-30's it will nail AC/DC on ch-1. And with the same setup on ch-2 it will do EVH #1,#2#3. The fx loop is parrellel and is transparent. I use it for digital reverb & delay. This amp works well with pedals in the front end too, wah's, TS 808's, DOD 250's, tonebone Trimode etc.. I will post some clip's if anyone wants to hear it after reviewing the schematic.

wishing you all a happy newyear!!

Welcome to da hood!

What kind of tube did you use for the loop? I've been hooked on SS loops for their transparency, but I'd like to try a tube buffered circuit. Did you notice any significant increase in noise or gain?

What kind of switching/relays did you use and how did you power them?

How do you like the Jose master? I saved a poorly drawn schem of it from the Metro forum, but I never got around to trying it.

Looks like your circuit will cover a lot of tones!

I used a JJ 12ax7 for the loop adjusted for unity gain & flat responce.
the relay's are Axicom 12vdc (like in the Dumble's) powered by a Radio Shack transformer.
The JOSE Mod is 2 1n4747 or 1n4743 zenner diode's ( could use 4148's as well) across the ch-2 master switched to ground. It adds a small amount of top end distortion ( sizzle ) like you hear on Ed's note's on the first album ( & RR tone had that sizzle on top as well).
This amp will cover alot of ground as far as tone's go. Ch-1 is almost all Plexi ( adjusted slightly for the TW transformer's & filter's) so getting Jimi Page, Foghat, Santana or any late 60's, early 70's tone's are all there ( use the right pedals like Dallas Rangemaster, FuzzFace, Hornby Skewes, wah's, just like they did). Ch-2 will get you into higher gain tone's (for solo's) depending on how you set the tone control's & gain. Leslie West, RaTT, Slash, EVH, Lynch or just about any 80's tone your looking for. After all, these guy's all used Marshalls with either a gain MOD or pedals ( RR used TS-808 & cascaded preamp ) wide open volume with slave out ( or dummy load w/ slave out )to processors + amp + speaker's. You can use the send/ line out on this amp to do the same thing, I do! I will post some clip's as soon as I can and thank you for your interest.

If you put the masters before the tone stack it will work better and if you move the loop after the tone stack too.
RR used MXR stuff.

Hey Guy’s, I’ve got one clip done. I tried the loop after the tone stack but it was never as transparent as having it in the circuit here, maybe I just didn't spend enough time working with it. The master before the tone stack is for shure crunchier, but with all that gain this amp has on tap I just really wanted to add that little bit of sizzle to it. anyway, listen to the clip if you like and tell me what you think and hear. thanks guys!
Here’s the run down:
Stock Les Paul Standard
Both master volumes are on 3
Presence on 6
Bass on 4
Mid on 5
Treble on 5
Ch-1 gain on 10 ( guitar volume rolled down for semi clean
Ch-2 gain on 5 ( lead tone diodes switched to on
ART Multiverb in loop ( reverb, delay and very little chorus
2x12 cab with G12H 30’s
close miked with SHURE SM57
FOSTEX VF-16 Trk 1 clean Trk 2 Lead
Audacity for mp3 converter
NO EQ or Compressor, just straight to deck & then computer.

thanks again for your interest,

WOW!

Very Nice! From a guy who cut his teeth on the late 70's early 80's music, very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Hey guys, here a few really bad pic's, I don't own a great camera so its the best I can do for now. I will get the strat clips up though, this amp has very good strat tones which isn't easy with a lot of amps I've used.

thanks guys,
Dennis

Nice!

I liked that.

A little on the bright side, but nothing a little knob twisting couldn't fix.

Don't let that smoke out!
