2 x 220uF, 2 x 330K on 50W

Post by mat »

What would be the difference in using 2 x 220uF, 2 x 330K instead of 2 x 100uF, 2 x 220K on 50W D-clone's power section (with 2 x 6V6, 6L6 or EL 34) ? Pros/cons ?

Bigger filters usually make the amp "Faster" and make the bass response tighter.

I think there are more overtones in both clean and OD modes with smaller filter caps. In fact it's a fun exercise to change from 100 to 50uF on the main B+ and listen to the difference in clean harmonics. The last 2 builds I've settled on 60uF. I haven't played with the values on a 100 Watt yet.....

Thanks for the explanations, I'll swap to 100uf/220k's then.

 Now I dont know wheter to put in 80uF or 100uF..

Would the 80uF have more harmonic content ? because that is what I like these amps most..hmmm.

Mat, I just put my amp back in its case. :? Now I am gonna have to pull it out again! I have the higher filtering as well. It sounds great and the bass is tighter but I am missing some harmonic content. I originally upped the values to 220uf x2 thinking it would eliminate some percieved high end hash. PLease, update the thread on how your amp responds to the lower filtering. I still have my original caps and might revisit them in the near future. but....

As tempting as it is to dig back in to that amp, I have a JTM45 clone on the bench now 85% complete!

Ok, I will definitely put in 80uF's and 220K's.

No, this is for my new HRM combo project, but I'll record something as soon it is finished :D

I went from the 2x220uf to 2x100uf in a 50W ODS HRM and I thought it made the amp respond in a less harsh manner in the high end and give me a little more harmonic content overall. My 2 cents.
